Bran Van Eats Montreal: Jimmy Must Settle for World

Arizona rockers, Jimmy Eat World, made a tour stop at the Medley last night. I used to really love this band, but in general, the show wasn’t nearly as cool as I had hoped it would be. The crowd definitely didn’t seem too excited for openers Attack in Black. The four-piece from Welland, ON provided a solid rock sound. However, despite their proficiencies, they failed to convince the audience, myself included, that the world needed yet another one of these.

A number of my friends nostalgically recount the wild Medley party nights they had in CEGEP. However, I find the venue to be one of the most perfectly mediocre and uneventful places in town. The layout is impractical; the acoustics atrocious, and their nasty toilet doors don’t even lock. I can see how it could get crazy when packed full of drunken raging eighteen-year-olds, but Jimmy Eat World did not attract such a crowd. Thus, I must conclude that there are at least a handful of other MTL venues of a comparable dimension boasting a service superior to that of the Medley.

The well-mannered mix of Vermontais and Quebecois appeared pleased, but not uber-excited, for the headliners. I must admit that my feelings were mixed as well. Despite my nostalgic attachment to Jimmy Eat World, they have done little in recent years to keep me attracted. With ‘Bleed American’, they had me believe that they were one of, if not the, finest American-style pop-rock acts around, with great songwriting and tightest live sound in the business. Maybe I just grew out of the genre, but subsequent albums failed to deliver.

Hence, I was surprised to see the audience digging the tracks from the last couple of albums (‘Futures’ and ‘Chase the Light’). The digging was well deserved given that their live performance, despite the aforementioned lousy acoustics, sounded awesome. But from my biased perspective, ‘Bleed American’ material took the cake. Tracks like ‘A Praise Chorus’, ‘Get if Faster’, and of course ‘Sweetness’ (the song that actually sounds the way its title would suggest) warmed my heart with fond memories of the early 2k’s.

Having reminisced enough, while simultaneously yearning to reminisce more, I left the Medley early and joined the hordes of Montrealers to check out Jimmy Eat World’s contemporaries; an act whose quality has also been gradually deteriorating since those early 2k’s. I don’t know that the Jazz Fest has ever witnessed insanity such as the crowd of nearly 200, 000 that showed up for Bran Van 3000.

Over 2 blocks away from the stage, I could see very little, but the feeling of being in such a huge mess of people was a cool enough experience. Although I subsequently heard a number of complaints about the performance, I thoroughly enjoyed the show myself, which was also apparently viewable on simpatico/MSN. In conclusion, I will leave you romantic Montrealers 'Astounded' with the video that takes us all back to those random trans-MTL make-out sessions.

Going to a show at Medley to enjoy the acoustics is like going to church for the buzz.

Goran, if only you and I got along, we could go to gigs together. I, too, used to love JEW. And I also weep over the Medley's mediocrity (guess why I wasn't at the show last night?). Impractical? You nailed it. That venue is perhaps best suited for lazy-day chillage but certainly not for acceptable rock gigs.

And, oh yeah, cheating does get it faster.

I chose TV on the Radio over Jimmy Eat World. Definitely the better choice!

Jimmy eats my world, that's for sure. I had such a great time, and even though their earlier work appeals to my young side, I love the way their work matured and intensified with Futures and Chase This Light. 23 was definitely among the top songs that night, too.

Since I can't not rebut...

1) Sounds like Pros-cow-her is turning you into the world's first anal-ogist.

2) We can't go to gigs together even if we did get along given that MP isn't pimp enough to get +1's almost ever. Unless you were offering to pay for me, which is kinda weird. You can't buy my friendship. And, yes, cheating does get it faster (sick track), but I prefer slow and painful.

3) They came to party I was at once and filmed everyone. That means they're awesome. How was it?

4) I'm glad you still love them. As I mentioned, a number of peeps in the crowd were totally diggin' the new stuff. I can't agree on the intensified part though. I guess I just lost touch.
