I know it might be too soon to say this, but I fully assume the following statement : seeing The Mae Shi at Zoobizarre last night will most certainly be part of my “top shows of 2008.”

Knowing The Mae Shi since their debut albums Terrorbird and Heartbeeps, I must admit I had high expectations. I wasn’t quite yet into their new album, HLLYH, which is less chaotic or raw, and a bit more experimental. However, regardless of which songs they choose to play live, The Mae Shi remains one of the most electrifying and energizing bands I’ve ever seen, and I now have no choice but to love the new record.

All throughout their set, The Mae Shi kept interacting with the full-capacity crowd in various ways, such as using big red flashlights on stage, making everyone hold a giant drape above their head, making people sit down and get back up all together, handclapping, cheering, etc. As if that wasn’t enough, all band members somehow found a way to be comfortable enough on the very tiny stage so they could move around all the time (I believe the right term is "ADD"). I also figured they really enjoyed playing in a cave since they were (erotically) touching the ceiling every chance they got.

The actual show went by really fast, mostly due to the fact that it was uninterrupted - every song was followed by some interesting music transtions, leading to another song, and so on.
As for the crowd, made of pretty-haired girls and boys with the coolest tattoos, they seemed to be captivated by the whole theatrical vibe The Mae Shi set up so well.
Now that the show is over and I want more, I was thrilled to find out there is a DVD out called “Lock The Skull, Load The Gun”, featuring a bunch of The Mae Shi music videos made by the band’s most talented / artsy friends. Very hip, but very fun.
