Coeur de Pirate's "Comme des Enfants"

We're seeing a lot of Jack Johnson teeshirts at Parc Jean Drapeau. The rootsy singer, who is rumoured to be the reason for this year's unusual scheduling, may be the draw for most of this surprisingly filled out Monday crowd. Val says that so far, the crowd today is about as large as yesterday's.

Some more snippets of today's shows:

Rogue Wave christened the Mountain Stage with their melodic Cali rock. An appropriate transition from Neil Halstead's slower stuff on the adjoining stage to later rockers like the Black Keys. Not everyone was crazy about it though. A friend of mine looking forward to their set left after the first song, complaining that they sounded nothing like the album. Remember, folks, this is a festival. Enormous sound systems and 20,000 people talking/screaming around you is going to distort the sound, but that's all part of the Osheagappeal.

I caught the last few songs of Montreal singer-songwriter Chris Velan, who had got the crowd going at the Scene des Arbres. This guy is one to watch.

Coeur de Pirate
played the badly designed Scene de Arbres (only those standing or sitting on the raised stage can see any of the performance). The breakout francophone singer is hyping her new album, due out September 16. Check out a clip of her playing Comme des Enfants up above.

Val on The Kills: "They put on a good performance and got the crowd going, even though their music would probably suit a later, post-a-few-drinks slot rather than the mid-afternoon."

And the sun is out! I'm off to take in some of the Black Keys on the big stage.

what's the rumour re: Jack Johnson and the scheduling?
Paloma / August 5, 2008 at 12:43 am
That the Sunday-Monday schedule was chosen to accommodate him... however I am just propagating rumours. Gillett peeps would have to confirm or deny this.

Actually, the 08 edition landed on a Sunday - Monday because the Island was booked up on the Saturday with the NASCAR race, and the site was therefore unavailable for Osheaga.

Having bands compete with the sound of roaring engines nearby and trying to direct human traffic with 40,000 NASCAR fans plus 20,000 Osheaga-goers was just not a viable option. :)

One thing I still don't understand: why was Osheaga in August this year?

YES to Val's comment about The Kills. So true and my thoughts exactly.
