Digable Planets: "We Be to Rap What Key Be to Lock"

I don't mean to come off as a hater, but all kinds of Montrealers have been teling me how they're all about hip hop. So where was you at last night? Did you miss out on Digable Planets at Les Saints 'cus you were pinching pennies for the next overpriced 50 Cent show at the Bell Center? That's pretty whack! Obviously, The Saints is not the best venue. Sound-wise, it's possibly one of the worst in the city, and it ain't pretty either. But I've often overlooked ambiance for the right kind of company.

It's true that they've been inactive since 1994, but they're 1993 album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space), which includes the Grammy winning single Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat), is both a classic record and an essential component to any hip hop collection. The Planets' second album, however, was worse and more of the same, leading to their untimely demise in 1994. 14 years later, they're back on tour in support of a new album.

It was a disappointment to see such a sparse crowd. I doubt that attendance exceeded 150. Although it made for a very intimate performance, it also made me think that T.O. knows more about hip hop than MTL. The Planets have aligned two nearly sold out shows at the MOD Club (bigger than the Saints), this weekend. I understand that Toronto's a bigger city, but why such a huge disparity in hip hop show attendance?

The Planets are real MC's. They can flow over anything, and they don't need vocal sampling like to bulk of contemporary rappers. Touring with a solid DJ (Jedi) and a versatile percussionist, their live shows are sure to get your hips swayin'. The style and grace of Ladybug Mecca were a pleasure to observe and groove to.

After becoming a mother, she took time off from the Planets to contribute to the Dino 5, a collective of dope rappers producing hip hop for kids (including Prince Paul and the members of the Roots and Jurassic 5). Their record is perfect for anyone with kids, and all y'all MTL hip hop kids. Rap is more than just sold out arena shows and overproduced/undertalented artists. I think it's time for some old schoolin'.

I agree there wasn't enough people, but at least it was an energetic and enthousiastic crowd.

I don't think you can go to one hip hop show and complain that MTLers are talking smack about liking hip-hop. The Common show at Metropolis last week was packed, and everyone had a great time. Half the crowd at Common wasn't even alive when Digable Planets were around, so cut the youngsters some slack, gramps.
