Trick or Treat? Broken Social Scene @ Metropolis, Oct. 31
If you're looking for something to do on Halloween, Metropolis has a line-up that's better than anything you'll get in your candy loot bag. Unless you're one of those lucky people who finds houses that give out FULL SIZE candy bars or chips bags (damn mini-formats are just a tease). Or, if you get tootsie rolls, that's pretty sweet, since there's nothing like a nice chewy bar of choco-plasticy-gummy stuff. Ok. Where was I?
Oh yeah. Toronto's ever-expanding rock collective, Broken Social Scene, is in town, presenting Brendan Canning's new(ish) album Something for all of us. Straight-up rock trio Land of Talk opens and will shower you with tunes from the rocktastic Some are Lakes. Local lead singer Liz Powell will be doing double duty, playing in both acts.
Midnight Poutine has yet to receive any word from the bands as to whether or not they will dress for the occasion. But on a night full of costumes, it will be hard to tell the difference between drunken Halloween revelers dressed up like hipsters from the actual hipsters themselves. I just hope there's tootsie rolls.

trick?
it's been getting mediocre reviews
Land of talk is great. I'd go just to see them!
Alexandra...yeah...the album has been received so-so. Same with Kevin Drew's last one. I think it's hard to know what to make of a "solo" disc that sounds like any other BSS release. But, like I said on this week's podcast: regardless of the range of quality in their albums, they always put on a pretty killer show.
The price is a bit steep, but like Sarah says, the double bill makes it a bit more worth it.
Happy halloween, whatever you decide to do.
treat treat treat
i'm pretty sure everyone was in love with Liz Powell at the end of the night
