Je Reviendrai a Montreal: Ariane Moffatt @ Metropolis

It's true that I should have written this review of Ariane Moffatt at the Metropolis in the French language. Unfortunately, such a post would have been even less decipherable than my regular Anglo babble. My ignorance may prevent me from writing posts in French, but it by no means prohibits me from appreciating Francophone music, or music sung through any other phone for that matter. And when it comes to the phones of the Franco style, I must admit that Ariane is my songstress préférée.

I've kiffed her gravely since my transition to Montreal a few years back. The initial appeal was tied to rumours that she was voted out of the band by the Moffatt brothers for being too rebellious and anatomically different. Maybe she was just too talented.

Her immense musical talent shone brilliantly as she gracefully and skillfully hopped from one instrument to the next while sensually serenading her adoring fans. The crowd stood infatuated with her perfectly powerful, yet dynamically delicate, voice set to smooth poppy combinations of folk, jazz, electro, and even a touch of reggae. Professionally tight and participating in the instrument shuffle, her backing band was immaculate, but did little to create movement amongst the crowd of late-twenty/thirty-something white Franco Quebecois. They must have been saving their energy for the thunderous applause, which brought Mlle Moffatt back for two crowd pleasing encores.

I've wanted to see her for a while now. She teased me this summer during the Jazz Fest when she put on a mesmerizing performance with Jedi Electro at the Savoy du Metropolis, but then I missed her series of three consecutive mid-October Club Soda shows. Thus, I was thankful for her capacity to fill a large MTL venue for the fourth time in less than a month.

Her track, Montreal, is a hymn to our city and a permanent resident on my I-pod. It's frequently employed in those anestrous and sedentary plane, train, or automobile moments as my return to MTL makes me shiver with anticipation. With my fast approaching departure, however, the song has taken on an increasingly nostalgic, and somewhat melancholic, mood.

Consequently, it has become imperative for me to address false G-chat accusations purported by some less enlightened poutiners (I won't name any "Stefan" names) ignorantly alleging that the tune originated with Robert Charlebois. Although the supposed "original" embodies lyrical composition parallels, the two tracks are nothing alike. I have to give him credit for supporting his song with a beautifully sentimental video that surely connects with any MTL enthusiast. But the day I hear Robert Charlebois sing "en format original", or "totally natural!" [reggae emphasis added], or better yet "le dub fait danser mes scandales", will be the day Montreal freezes over.
