A Good Night and a Long Morning at The Outdoors Club

Posted by Greg / May 2, 2009

20090502-Mixylodian.jpgLast night brought The Great Indie-Rock Caper of 2009 to its spectacular conclusion. As I explained in the last post, there was a killer show going on at "The Outdoors Club" but no one seemed to know where the venue was. Determined to find it, I got together with a buddy of mine for some serious detective work. We sifted through evidence, interviewed potential witnesses, combed over the sidewalks of Montreal with a magnifying glass. We did some DNA analysis, some surveillance work. There was a laser used at one point, although I can't reveal the details publicly.

Okay, actually, someone found the address and sent it to me yesterday morning. A little anticlimactic, but at least I knew where the place was.

As if I needed to make my life more difficult, I left for the show around 10pm without writing down the actual address that had been so generously provided for me. My friend thought he knew the building but actually got the wrong one - it was locked, and getting in required a security code. I can deal with promoters concealing a venue location, but needing a code to see a show? That would have been too much (or maybe it would have been ingenious, I don't know). In any case, we still did some actual detective work, hunting down the real location by watching out for partygoers and listening for noise. A little adventure, yes, but entirely because of our inability to write things down.

With a super secret, concealed, microfilm spy camera (i.e., Blackberry), we took some photographs of the inside. The only one that turned out is of me looking like a giant dork.

If you look behind the dork, you will see The Outdoors Club, a pretty typical Mile End loft space. Not actually outdoors, although there were some fake palm-trees and a giant window giving a panoramic view of eastern Montreal.

Silly Kissers started things off with a set of catchy 80s-inspired dance music, equal parts Pet Shop Boys and Cindi Lauper, with striped beach outfits to boot. Following them was my favorite act of the night and the main reason I went in the first place - Wax Mannequin, the monicker of singer-songwriter and guitarist Chris Adeney. It wasn't the best choice putting a solo artist after a dance band; much of the room cleared out with the change in tone. His rootsy, growly, sound might have worked better with a full band. But despite all this, Adeney's supreme song-writing talent and stage presence came through and ultimately won over the audience.

Mixylodian went on around midnight and brought back the dancing with their unique brand of electro-infused pop. Their set had the all special jubilation of a homecoming show, the room obviously packed with friends and devoted fans. It also came off as a farewell show, in a sense, because the band are apparently leaving on a three-month tour that will take them across North America and Australia. Glad I got 'em while I could.

At this point I thought the night was winding down. We left the show and stopped by another friend's party, who was having one last bash in her apartment before moving out. But once there, everyone kept talking about an afterparty in a loft further east. Sure enough, they meant the show we had left, and sure enough I found myself back there at around 3:30am.

We danced and drank until the break of dawn. Literally. I stopped watching the time and had one of those moments where you finally look at your clock and realize it's five-in-the-fucking-morning. I'd been having a drunken heart to heart conversation with my homegirl in the stairwell and missed the moment when the sun peaked over the horizon. When we went back up, blue light was pouring through the giant window, and the DJ put on the most perfectly chosen closing song possible: "Rise Above" by The Dirty Projectors.

Thanks for a great night, Montreal. I'll see you again next weekend.

Hmm... you sound like a pretty crafty detective. Are your services for hire...I've got some things that need looking into (long lost relatives, buried treasure, and finding that Island the lost survivors are on.)

I'm down but I don't have a car. So if the treasure, relatives, and survivors are on, say, Ile Perrot, I'm your man.

Is it very difficult to set up your own blog?
I'm not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast.
I'm thinking about making my own but I'm not sure where to start.
Do you have any points or suggestions? Appreciate it
