A Late-Night Performance by Sarah D. at The Red Door, May 9

Posted by Greg / May 10, 2009

Sarah D.jpgSometimes there are just too many good shows happening at once and the only solution is throwing up your hands in surrender and going to a house party. This is what I did for the evening. But as the time crept further and further past midnight, there was increasing talk of going to The Red Door, where one such show had happened earlier (or was still underway, we weren't sure). A friend's 1am text message aptly summed up the situation: "Either it's over now, or going on A LOT longer." So once the house party ran out of booze, we decided to check out The Red Door on our way home, and sure enough there was still plenty of music to be had.

Even though it was fast approaching Montreal's ostensible 3am curfew, the large apartment/loft that is The Red Door was still packed and jumping. Special Noise, who were finishing their set as I arrived, inspired comedically restrained crowd surfing in what was little more than a living room. They were the last officially billed act of the night (the others being Braids and ZipZup), but as they were putting away their gear, someone said another band was starting upstairs. This turned out to be Sarah D., the accordion/banjo duo of Sarah and Dee (last names unknown, to me at least).

The two sat in the corner of a packed hallway and rolled through a set of traditional-folky, always catchy songs. The cramped atmosphere gave the whole thing a rowdy pub vibe, in the best sense possible, with the audience clapping and stomping along. I was especially impressed with Sarah and Dee's tight vocal harmonies and the timeless sound of their melodies. Unfortunately I don't always travel with a real camera, let alone a nice one, so I had to capture the scene on my grainy cell phone camera. Considering how late it was, I suspect most people's memories of the show are no clearer than this anyway:
20090509-SarahDRedDoor2.jpgI chatted with them a bit after their set and learned they had just embarked on a tour of Eastern Canada which would take them to Quebec City, Halifax, and PEI. While they do have some set dates, the whole voyage is coming together pretty spontaneously, as they pick up extra shows wherever they can. As their myspace page puts it: "Kitchens, backyards, art spaces, bars, parks, community centers, living rooms; we want to play them all. See you there? Sarah D."

Had I known there was so little other information about them online I might have inquired about more, like their last names and how they got started and when a full-length album is coming out. Oh well. At least some of their music is online, and I highly suggest giving it a listen. If you like what you hear, maybe they'll play your living room?

You really make it seem so easy along with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I feel I'd never understand.
It seems too complex and very large for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will attempt to get the hang of it!
