Something Special Tonight in Little Italy: Sister Suvi, The Coal Choir, T H O M A S, Quiet Hooves, and Bird Names at The Eastern Bloc

20090518-EasternBloc.jpgThere are few better ways of spending Victoria Day than watching The Black Sabbath Story on DVD, obvs. But the day after Victoria Day? Gotta hit the Eastern Bloc.

Tonight will feature one of the most interesting music lineups the venue has presented so far. The headliners, Sister Suvi, are just returning from a tour in support of their debut LP, Now I Am Champion, and seem ready for a crazy homecoming bash. The ukulele, guitar and bass trio cover a wide range of musical styles in a jammy framework that comes together in an inexplicably perfect way.

Also performing will be the mysterious Coal Choir, offering selections from their still-under-development rock opera, Olivia. This group needs to be seen to be believed, and accordingly, I've put their stunning rehearsal video below the jump.

There will also be rare Montreal performances from Quiet Hooves (Athens, GA), Bird Names (Chicago), and T H O M A S (Toronto)

Of all the loft venues out there, the Eastern Bloc is easily my favorite. The open atmosphere and quality of artistic material there has given me some of my best (and longest) nights of the past year. Their events have a way of transcending "party" or "concert" and becoming something much more unique and special. Tomorrow night should be no exception.

The Eastern Bloc is located at 7240 rue Clark, near Jean Talon and St. Laurent. Doors open at 8.

1st - Coal Choir
2nd - Bird Names
3rd - T H O M A S
4th - Quiet Hooves

Don't miss this show... I wish I was there. I'm in Quiet Hooves but couldn't make this tour. Meanwhile, my pal David just flew into Vermont and is trying to drive/bus to make the show tonight and catch up with those hooves. PS Sister Suvi is awesome, and so is Bird Names.

Just got home from the show, and I'm quite happy.

Very interesting acts, awesome music, and I got to hang out with one of my favorite bands (Quiet Hooves).

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback on the show. I had an awesome time myself.

Warning: It's easy to forget these are in your ears.
These headphones are more like traditional headphones rather than
the small ear buds that are meant to fit in the ear canals.
There are five kinds of headphones: earbuds and in ear which stick in your ears,
on ear which sit on top of your ears, over ear which cover your ears completely, wireless which are cordless, and finally
headsets which add a microphone to the mix.
