Doves @ Le National: Dreaming in Brit-rock

Posted by Gabby / June 3, 2009

doves-060309.jpgLast night, Manchester trio Doves was dropping by. I was insanely excited, having been a fan of the band for a few years, and boy, did they not disappoint. The band put on an amazing light-video-music show that converted new fans and enchanted old ones, drawing from their new album as well as old faithfuls.

The opening band, Wild Light, was not half as bad as I thought they would be, judging from the first song and the fact that two of the three vocalists couldn't sing worth a damn. They had a few catchy tunes, but they were clearly not ready to share the stage with a band like the Doves, and the crowd quickly stopped paying attention.

When Doves came on, the crowd got loud. I have to say, I was really impressed by them. One of the reasons why I love this band so much is because they can craft the most beautiful, enchanting songs out of simple melodies, and then layer on the effects. How well would that translate into a live show? As I expected, it translated very well. Their performance was simply flawless, from the musicianship to the videos played on a big screen.

Doves have two main singers: Jimi Goodwin, also bassist, and Jez Williams, on the guitar. While they both have good voices, I tend to prefer Goodwin at the mic, just because his voice is a lot easier on the ears, Williams' tending to be a little too nasal for me. Live, they complemented each other so perfectly that the vocal harmonies were almost better than on the album.

While they were touring on their latest album, Kingdom of Rust, they made a point of going back in time again and again, alternating between new songs and older hits from The Last Broadcast, Lost Souls, and of course, Some Cities. They even played "Firesuite", an instrumental number which took whole new proportions with the lighting and video effects.

If you have never heard of this band, please do yourself a favor and check them out.

I had seen them live in 2005 at the Spectrum. I still say it's one of the best shows I've seen. The people who coordinated the lights to the music did an incredible job. I'm glad they haven't let that person go. :)

Glad to hear you enjoyed the boys, have seen them many times now and have never ever been disappointed. They are totally amazing live.

Am seeing them on the 13th for an open air gig in Delamere Forest, Cheshire UK. Can't wait!

Just a couple of points, pedantic they may be, but all three of the guys sing -Jimi is lead but the twins also do their bits rather splendidly on various tracks. Also, no 'the' in Doves!
