Nothing Lasts Forever, Even Cold November (I meant, Summer) Rain

Posted by Greg / June 18, 2009

Gabrielle.jpgRight? It's going to end, RIGHT?!?!? I've had a marathon week of good music and intended on topping it off with a crazy trip to Acadie (for our Metro Roulette series), followed by perusing the St. Laurent Street Festival and then checking out Grilled Cheese Thursdays at Blue Dog. Then the weather went all monsoon on us and ruined the plans. LAME. Not the proper way of spending my last weekend in Montreal. (It's my last weekend in Montreal for a while, by the way.)

In any case, the rain gives me a good opportunity to catch up on important business, like reviewing concerts, picking up library books, subletting my apartment and perfecting my sandwich making skills (two words: walnut sauce). Getting to the former, I started off last night with Gabrielle Papillon's performance at L'Escalier.

I first met Gabrielle as an undergrad at Concordia and have since known her as someone who excels at anything she puts her mind to. Her recent return to music (having released an album in the early-2000s) has produced magnificent results. In a matter of months, she has written something like a dozen new songs to supplement her already large back catalogue. Her recent turn appeals to a wide variety of tastes, including folk, soul, indie-rock, and punk.

Last night's show was extra special because it incorporated songs and performances from Simon Honeyman and Lisa Malachowski. The trio met while performing at The Yellow Door and have since combined parts of their acts into one of Montreal's finest folk collaborations (or maybe it's a supergroup? Usually "supergroups" include at least one member who is fresh out of drug rehab, so maybe not.) They are paying a longer collaborative show at The Yellow Door tomorrow night and I suggest catching them on the same stage while you can.

Later that night my friends and I descended upon Blues Night at Barfly. I intend on writing a more sustained piece on Blues Night in the future, but for now I just wanna say that I've come to love the "neighborhood bar" vibe at Montreal's finest dive. The house blues band, Blind, have been playing every Wednesday night for over ten years, and it shows in their tight chops and obvious love for their music and the bar in which they play it. There's no better place to nurse a pint and take in some good, honest tunes.

Jumping back to Monday, my buddy Mike introduced me to the electro/post-punk/whatever-you-wanna-call-them band Woodhands. It had totally slipped my mind that a stellar concert was going down that night at Green Room and I was initially disappointed when we arrived just after Tune-Yards left the stage. Was I willing to throw down $10 for one more band? No, not really. But Mike made me reconsider (he had befriended Woodhands during his time in Toronto) and I'm extremely glad I did. Woodhands retained everything I like about electro music - intensity, experimentalism, catchiness, danceability, and unrestrained fun - minus everything I don't like (insert any sloppy loft-party-noise-rock band here). Let's all watch them do their thing while we pray for sunshine.

Gabrielle Papillon will be performing with Simon Honeyman and Lisa Malachowski at The Yellow Door (3625 Aylmer) tomorrow, June 19, at 8pm. They are opening for for Canadian folk legend Jon Brooks. Get there early, since the venue has a tendency of filling up.

Your site was extremely interesting, especially since I was searching for thoughts on this subject last Thursday.
