If I was in Montreal #1 - Wayne Shorter

Posted by Greg / July 3, 2009

20090703-WayneShorter.jpgMidnight Poutine writer and concert addict Greg Bouchard will be living on the East Coast for the remainder of the summer, painfully far away from Montreal's music scene. In this series, he will pick one show per week that he would attend if he was in town, and then invite readers to comment with their own reviews. Let him live vicariously through you.

Most people don't realize that Wayne Shorter is, without a doubt, one of the coolest musicians in the world. If you like jazz even a little bit, then you necessarily like Wayne Shorter, because he has played a key role in literally everything good that has happened to jazz since the 1950s. For example, are you into jazz-fusion? Yeah, Wayne Shorter basically invented that, along with Miles Davis and a few others. Ditto on electro-funk via Weather Report and his collaborations with Herbie Hancock.

If I could actually see Wayne Shorter in concert, my excitement would reach religious levels of intensity. Shorter is one of the last living musicians who was actually there for the greatest and most innovative era of jazz. He didn't hear about Miles Davis from a history channel documentary, he played in the Miles Davis quintet, made his name through Miles Davis. Dude replaced John-fucking-Coltrane in 1964 and became Davis's prime composer and improvisational foil.

Then things got weird by the end of the 1960s. And by weird, I mean AWESOME; I mean reinventing music, reaching the pinnacle of experimental jazz.

People. See Wayne Shorter.

I realize I won't get much reader feedback on this one because tickets are pretty expensive (see below) and MP isn't exactly a blog for jazz aficionados. At the very least, hang out at Snack n' Blues in Mile End where they frequently play the Bitches Brew DVD in its entirety.

The Wayne Shorter Quintet plays tonight at Theatre Maisonneuve.
Tickets cost $44.50-64.50, which isn't so bad if you think of it as three shows at Sala with non-legendary bands.
