If I was in Montreal #5 - St. Vincent

Posted by Greg / August 7, 2009

20080708-AnnieClark.jpgMidnight Poutine writer and concert addict Greg Bouchard will be living on the East Coast for the remainder of the summer, painfully far away from Montreal's music scene. In this series, he will pick one show per week that he would attend if he was in town, and then invite readers to comment with their own reviews. Let him live vicariously through you.

I'm going to begin by admitting that I have a huge crush on Oklahoma's Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, and that this is part of my reason for wishing I could attend her concert at Sala tonight. I'm thinking maybe I could impress her with my nunchuck skills or bow fighting skills and we'd get married and start a farm together, or perhaps a general store. Something folksy like that. Okay, I'll stop now. Obvious good looks aside, St. Vincent is a juggernaut of song writing and guitar playing talent, a former student of the prestigious Berklee College of Music and ex-member of The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens' touring band. Her two critically acclaimed albums, Marry Me (2007) and Actor (2009), have solidified her position as a must-see and must-hear artist.

What separates her from the pack is her technical proficiency on the guitar combined with her angelic, otherworldly voice. Plenty of artists can sing you to sleep, but she can shred with the best of them while doing it. Check out this video of her covering one of my favorite Beatles songs.

Awesome. There isn't much more I can say because St. Vincent, despite her formidable media presence, remains something of a mystery to me. I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe it's all the hype, but I feel like I won't fully "get" her until I see everything come together on a live stage. This is the main reason I wish I could see her perform tonight. Alas, not this time.

Greg you missed it: sometime between the middle of the set and the end, St. Vincent broke down. Squinting through barely withheld tears, she confessed that she could no longer keep secret the pain behind her songs (and consequently, why she can sing the blues).

She claimed that she is haunted by a nightly loneliness; by a void that can only be filled by frizzy haired history grad students, especially those over-enthused Hume scholars under-enthused about cleaning. Preferably recovering southerners also.

Know any?

i still think about that show.. she did the dig a pony as her one solo song and it has really progressed since this one you posted here.
anyways- all the recorded arrangements, they did it live with the bass player doubling on the clarinet, the 2nd guitar on violin, the keyboard on flute and sax, and everybody but the drummer sang.
i took a friend who was skeptical, and he was floored.
good pick!
