POP 09 : Do you like free shows? "Secret" shows? Read on...

Posted by Greg / October 3, 2009

20091002-Parlovr.jpgPop Montreal can get very expensive very quickly. If you don't have a pass, each show is gonna set you back about $10 (or possibly much more for headliners) and that adds up if you switch venues a few times in a night. If you do have a pass... it's pretty awesome until you remember that you dropped at least $85 on that sucker. Can't a music lover get something for free in this town? The answer is a big "yes!" (Note: recently updated.)

The record store Phonopolis is hosting a series of free concerts in their basement with some of Pop's bigger acts. We're talkin' Clues, Valleys, Ryan Power, and Nutbrown on October 3rd. Then Parlovr, Luyas, and Vincat on Sunday. Both shows start at 3pm. They're not exactly "secret," since you can find info on the internet here and sometimes here, but they're not officially part of Pop and haven't received any substantial press.

Then there are shows happening alongside afternoon BBQs at Notman House (now at Green Room due to the persistently shitty weather). Saturday will feature one of my Pop favorites, Cotton Mouth, along with Geen Go, Holger, Parlovr, and The D'Ubervilles. If you catch this post in time, go this afternoon for Snailhouse (on as I write), Andrew Vincent, Chris Page, Hollerado, and Sports: The Band (closing things out at 6:00). Both events offer free food "while supplies last." If you're not in the mood to jog over right this minute, get there tomorrow at 1pm for the first band.

Dearling Physique will be giving a free show in the basement of the Ukrainian Federation at 6pm Saturday, overlooking the much underrated record fair and gear swap that is Puces Pop.

And finally, Green Room won't be taking your money at the door on Saturday if you wanna see the podcast-featured Coltrane Motion (11:15pm).

So if you're running low on cash, just relax. Many of Pop's best artists are doin' their thing free of charge.

Update as of Saturday, Oct 3: Mainline Theatre (3997 St. Laurent) is hosting an after party tonight from 11pm onward. No word on whether any bands are playing, but free show seekers should stop in and check.

Phonopolis is located at 5403A Ave du Parc

Notman House, a.k.a. Pop headquarters, is at 51 Sherbrooke o
