11/09/09: You Say Party, We Say Think About Life

Immaculate Machine, You Say Party! We Say Die! and Think About Life lined up at Il Motore last weekend for an all-Canadian evening of fine indie-rock bands. The show was completely sold out but some persistent people still hung out to hear the bands play from outside.I didn't get to check out Vancouver's Immaculate Machine but I sure got my British Columbia dance-punk fix with YSP!WSD!

I came to the show a bit tired and YSP!WSD! was able to really give me the energy boost I needed. I had heard a few good songs from their new album "XXXX" but it's the live experience that really make their music interesting to me. The band members have quite a lot of stage experience from all the touring they did, and it shows.

Another video from their set here

At some point Becky, the singer, was going off barefoot in the crowd during songs but since the floor was covered in beer bottles, she cut herself and ended up dripping blood everywhere. Very punk rock, as she said. You Say Party! We Say Die! definitely pumped the crowd got everyone ready for Think About Life.

As the headliner, Think About Life didn't fail to throw a dance party up in there.
Catchy songs from the new album - like "Sweet Sixteen" and "Johanna" - made a good excuse for some (often extreme) dancing and lots of body surfing. Their sound is very accessible and I certainly hope it'ill reach out more and more people outside this city, especially after being compared to acts like Liars and getting to open for established bands like Wolf Parade. Despite a musical blooper and a few questionable uses of microphone time by singer Martin Cesar, Think About Life's performance was still worth the creepy walk home at 1 AM on Jean-Talon.

If you want to make sure not to miss You Say Party! We Say Die! and Think About Life, just make your way to Cabaret on Thursday November 19 to see them perform at this year's M For Montreal.

i really love the new think about life album, but i've seen them live twice now, and each time i've been really disappointed. they have lots of energy, sure, but the sound (particularly the vocals) is bad enough to make me (and others) cringe during the live show. with the exception of when Caila from shapes + sizes is singing, she has an incredible voice.

here's hoping that the numerous concerts they're playing in the near future improve things!

Good observation.
It was the first time I saw TAL live so I couldn't really tell if the vocals were bad or if it was just Il Motore's fault..
I do agree that Caila's voice is impeccable, but perhaps the band doesn't even really care with how "well" the vocals turn out.. Like you said, only time will tell!
