This week in concerts: Not a whole lot going on as far as the big shows are concerned, which is good for all the people out there still saving up to buy their John Mayer tickets. However, there's a lot of sweet, soft music from small acts coming up just in time for V-day.

Wednesday, Feb. 10 :
Laura Marling w/ The Wheel, Divan Orange
UK siren Laura Marling is bringing her beautiful voice and soft tunes to the coolest orange couch in town. Opening for her is Colorado outfit The Wheel, the side project of two members from Born in the Flood.

Thursday, Feb. 11 :
The Sadies, Young Rival and Mike O'Brien, Il Motore
I first discovered Mike O'Brien when he opened for David Martel a very long time ago. He an extraordinarily skilled musician, and a fantastic storyteller to boot. The Sadies hail from Toronto, and their borderline-country folk sound is easy on the ears and definitely good for the brain. Young Rival, from Hamilton, bring on the rock and fun to a night that sounds better every second.

Friday, Feb. 12 :
Basia Bulat w/ Leif Vollebekk, L'Astral
Basia Bulat, who recently opened for Mr. Patrick Watson and his Wooden Arms at the Metropolis, is back to show off her strong voice and fun songs. Opening act Leif Vollebekk's name might be a mouthful, but the Montreal singer-songwriter, who sings in French and English, will definitely charm you.

Note: This is just a quick overview according to a highly biased writer. There are plenty more shows out there that suit every genre and style preference. I personally use Stillepost (for smaller shows) and Pollstar (for bigger entertainers) for show listings.

Saturday night at O Patro Vys Moondata Production present their 40th LabProject.

Here's the event description: Brad Barr - guitar, banjo, guimbri
Rebecca Foon - cello
Bill Hesselink - drums, tabla
Matt Lederman - guitar/fx
Sarah Page - harp
David Payant - drums
Mishka Stein - bass
Patrick Watson - keys (and maybe some gamelan percussion)
pinkrubberlady - visuals

Back again once more before taking another leave of absence. Just couldn't leave without one more love-in! And what a line-up!!! Basically, I created this series just so i could be able to perform with such lovely and talented human beings. yikes!

Most of these people need no introduction but seeing as this is a valentine's themed LABproject, I will share my love for these people publicly....

Brad is monster guitarist of the fame of The Slip, SuperLittle, Berithen Berio. He's one of those guys who you love to hate to love because he is that good.

Becky Foon plays with Esmerine & Silver Mt. Zion. She simply radiates positive musical vibes. She also recently did the soundtrack for the film H2Oil. Go see it!

This is the 4th time Sarah Pagé is playing at a LOVEproject. Apparently we only have harpists in February. She's a powerhouse player and one of the most creative people we know.

David Payant is the superfantastic drummer who has played with Ideal Lovers, Silver Mt. Zion, Vic Chesnut. He holds down a mean groove that will make you smile. This is the 3rd time he's playing a LAB and am so excited to have him back.

Mishka Stein is the low end in one of the most solid and swinging rhythm sections in town, that is... in the band known as 'Patrick Watson'. He's a rock star who tours the world, and his bass tone is the best.

Patrick Watson was at the very first LOVEproject and helped us share our musical loves over the years. It's been too long since we've seen him at one of these. And while he'll be bringing his keys, it's his acquisition of some gamelan percussion that we really want him to bring out. More noise toys!

Pinkrubberlady will be supplying some magical visuals to accompany our musical journeying.

The lovely and extremely talented harpist/singer/songwriter Joanna Newsom will be at the Ukrainian Federation on the 14th & 15th. Highly recommended, I only wish I was in Montreal this weekend to catch a show.;VenueID=59333&City=&State=&Zip=&StartDate=&EndDate=&Rec=False
