March 5: Surfer Blood, Turbo Fruits, Yukon Blonde - Il Motore

I hadn't been curious for a show like this in a while. The three bands released albums recently and I liked all of them, so seeing them at a venue next to my pad was even more exciting.

As soon as I walked in, Il Motore was decently full and the buzz was really on. I then realized I had just missed the hippie Kelowna trio Yukon Blonde. Their 60's influenced album released in January is worth giving a listen, as well described in our most recent podcast as a mix of Fleet Foxes and Fleetwood Mac. Adding insult to injury, some friends who arrive on time at shows confirmed their set was excellent.

The second trio of the evening was who I truly came to see: Turbo Fruits. "Echo Kid" is their second album that got me quite interested. The leader's previous band was Be Your Own Pet, who had potential but didn't make it long enough. Turbo Fruits mixes surf rock with a raw, garagesque sort of punk - the kind of stuff you either love or hate. Not much info is available on them except that they live in Nashville and have a list of 25 things they really enjoy on which I agree at 90%. Needless to say I was extremely satisfied with their performance and I was glad to see the crowd bouncing on Mama's Mad Fried Cos I Fried My Brains.

Turbo Fruits' set seemed pretty short and quickly after, Surfer Blood came on stage. Half of Surfer Blood is coming from the hardcore scene and found its other half at a party during a Miami festival in 2009. In less than a year of existence, the band managed to come out with "Astro Coast", a well-packed record full of energetic indie-pop songs that made Pitchfork go nuts. Surfer Blood are openly influenced by 90s iconic bands like The Pixies, Pavement, Built to Spill and Weezer. They played the first 15 seconds of "Undone" about 5 times during the show, almost making us believe they would cover it.. Instead, they performed the album with a fifth member - percussionist - who looked really into it. The signer had a bit of trouble hitting the right notes but the crowd didn't seem to care at all.
The only thing I was disappointed about was that Il Motore was booked for some kind of DJ party after the show and it seemed the show was shut down abruptly. Or maybe I should just try to be on time.

I actually heard a lot of complaints from people who attended this about how the DJ set seemed to take priority at the venue that night (I wasn't there, so just sayin').

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought the show was too short!
