Rock Camp for Girls 2nd Annual Fundraiser

Last Saturday, Rock Camp for Girls hosted a concert fundraiser at Il Motore. The event featured a variety of acts: Kay Pettigrew, Gardens of Heat, Pretty on the Outside, Bent by Elephants, and Charlotte Cornfield. Having covered the Rock Camp for Girls end of camp showcase last year, it was a real treat to catch-up, and see how this truly exceptional organization raises money for their cause.

With a minimum $10 donation at the door, one received a free raffle ticket, however, the event was pay what you can. Those who bought or received a raffle ticket had the chance to win a delightful array of desirable prizes: tickets to the CocoRosie show, a basket of delicious deserts, a free haircut from a talented local hairdresser, and more.

First up was acoustic act Kay Pettigrew, who had one of the most unique and powerful voices I've ever heard. I don't say this flippantly; I've heard a lot of voices (interpret that how you'd like). Though she clearly has seasoned her voice with practice, there was something organic and innate to Pettigrew's vocal talent. Hailing from Toronto, Pettigrew is a musician who does not shy away from belting out notes and stretching her voice to impressive extremes, which caused the audience to collectively whoop, gasp or clap. Notable was the first song she performed, "Ornithology" (have I ever told you that a friend of a friend of mine is an ornithologist with the last name Bird? True story). Pettigrew is connected to the organization because she taught guitar at the camp last year, among other things.

Gardens of Heat is a four-piece classic rock combination. All four members volunteered at Rock Camp for Girls last year and enjoyed the experience so much they decided to form a band. This was their first show ever, which was apparent only in a few musical hiccups here and there. Their sound was mainly 90's grunge reverb, with some interesting indie rock touches, for example: ambient swooshing sounds, instrumental build-ups and lengthy sequences sans vocals.

Pretty on the Outside is a Hole cover band. Not only do they accurately cover the band's songs, they also radiate Hole's dark, cynical vibe with blatantly ironic and comedic undertones. The singer was sporting a ruffled blond wig, exaggerated, running mascara and a zip-up red pleather dress. The Courtney Love look-alike also expertly impersonated her, both vocally and personality-wise. She directed this hilariously spiteful comment at an audience member dressed in a unicorn costume, "You f______ unicorn, showing up here like it's a f______ happy parade!" Tee-hee.

Bent by Elephants is a large band featuring an interesting array of instruments: trumpet, trombone, guitar, stand-up bass, drums and more. This created a nice, diverse resonance that focused less on individual instruments and more on a collective sound. What I also enjoyed about this band is their employment of Led Zepplin-style bow on guitar to create a lovely, hollow echo of static. As much as this has been done before by other bands, I enjoy it every time.

Charlotte Cornfield, another Rock Camp for Girls teacher, performed an upbeat mix of pop and folk influences. What came to mind was how easy on the ears and accessible her music was; they're the kind of tunes that could easily create the backdrop to a commercial or television show. This is a great, under-appreciated quality; there's a simple truth to her sound, one that doesn't hammer you with contrived meaning.

Though the concert was quite delayed, (beginning more than an hour after schedule) the venue was jam-packed throughout the evening, indicating a fruitful fundraising effort. Thus, I heartily anticipate this summer's showcase event!

Rock Camp for Girls will be hosting a free open house event for prospective campers Saturday, March 6th at La Sala Rossa, 4848 St-Laurent Blvd. Doors are at 11:30a.m., with the event taking place between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
