This week in concerts: Like Google chat would say... and we're back! Hang on tight, students - freedom is almost within reach. For those of you lucky enough not to have exams a-comin', there's always the ever-budding Montreal music scene. And boy, is there neat stuff coming up.

Monday, April 12:
The Low Anthem w/ The Barr Brothers, Gesu
Providence, RI folk/blues quartet The Low Anthem will have the pleasure of playing their various instruments in a great venue that hasn't ever been mentioned in this column before. The Barr Brothers, the experimental side-project of The Slip's founding members, shows a romantic and soft side to the musicians, whose debut was recorded in Montreal with several local musicians, and is due out soon.

Wednesday, April 14:
Caspian w/ Arms and Sleepers, Divan Orange
Caspian, a Massachusetts band that describes itself as "rock" (haven't seen that word on Myspace in a while), is more of an instrumental post-rock band - sort of like Mogwai's American little cousin. Their openers, ambient-soft-rockers Arms and Sleepers, are somewhat in the same branch of quiet, relaxing music - but with lyrics. Bottom line: if you don't know Mogwai, you probably shouldn't go to this show.

Wednesday, April 14:
Freezepop w/ Plushgun, Green Room
Everyone who watches the L Word - yes, that includes little old me - knows at least one Freezepop song ("Swimming Pool"). The Boston synth-electro-pop band has been around for about a decade and while they never really broke into the "mainstream", I hear college students love 'em. On the other side, Plushgun, a synth-laced indie rock threesome from Brooklyn, had a song on "The City". Go figure.

Thursday, April 15:
Jason Collett w/ Zeus and Bahamas, Petit Campus
Broken Social Scene-er Jason Collett's brand new album, Rat a Tat Tat, is most likely not named after a Pokemon, but it sure has been lauded by critics since it was released in March. He brings with him fellow Arts&Crafts band Zeus, who used to be Mr. Collett's back-up band Dark Horse before recording under this name along with Afie Jurvanen, now recording and touring under the name Bahamas. The whole clan's there, isn't it beautiful?

Thursday, April 15:
Miniature Tigers w/ The Morning Benders, Sala Rossa
BIG FAT WARNING: THIS SHOW MAY HAVE BEEN CANCELED.
I am currently investigating, since Last.fm marks the show as canceled but not the Sala's website or Greeland's. Miniature Tigers wrote on their myspace MySpace that "sadly, and for reasons beyond our control, we won't be able to play these three shows in Canada with our friends, The Morning Benders. We hope to get up to see our fans in Canada soon". I'm not sure if that means the entire lineup is out... more soon!

Friday, April 16:
Red Sparowes w/ Doomrider and Fang Island, Sala Rossa
LA post-rock Red Sparowes is a bit of a weird creature. Consisting of members from Isis (as in the sludge-metal band, yes), Halifax Pier, Angel Hair and Pleasure Forever, they make moody, experimental indie rock that's quite interesting. Riding with them (pun!) is Massachusetts metal band Doomriders, and Pitchfork darlings Fang Island with their upbeat and ridiculously catchy indie rock. Can you say weirdest lineup ever?

Note: This is just a quick overview according to a highly biased writer. There are plenty more shows out there that suit every genre and style preference. I personally use Stillepost (for smaller shows) and Pollstar (for bigger entertainers) for show listings.
