Call & Response: The City Streets
Call & Response is a series of Q&As with bands, artists and random people we dig that live in Montreal, visit here, or have some dubious connection to the city. Fitting into that category is The City Streets, an honestly gritty (or grittily honest?) rock 'n' roll combo from Montreal/Franktown (halfway between?) playing this Saturday night at Chez Baptiste sur Masson. I was lucky enough to virtually catch up with The City Streets' singer/songwriter/guitarist and North-American-everyman Rick Reid.
Besides family, friends, other music, and long summer nights, what influences your music the most?
Travelling, trying new things I have no actual ability at, literature, film, doubt, anything mysterious or unexplainable, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
Where is the best place to listen to your music?
The morning after a party when you've been up all night and the sun is coming up, it's just you and a few stragglers in various states of oblivion/fear/epiphany; on headphones walking around the city at night; at one of our shows in some dive bar on a Monday night in the middle of a long tour.
What do you love most about Montreal?
The unbelievable depth of the brilliant music scene. And the very arrogant, very large squirrels.
What do you love most about poutine?
The fact that it shouldn't taste good, but it does; it surprises and delights any skeptic. Also, cheese is my life.
What do you hate most about poutine?
The scarcity of vegetarian poutine options in this great city, except for La Banquise, and select Lafleurs.
Who was your first live concert? Was it everything you had ever imagined?
Bryan Adams, at around 9 years old. It was incredible.
How did you spend your 16th birthday?
I don't remember, but most likely drunk and nowhere near whichever girl I was pining for at the time.
But Rick's not it; check out the whole gang this Saturday night at Chez Baptiste sur Masson. And wear your Bryan Adams t-shirt.
