Call & Response: Darling Ghosts

Posted by Luc / August 30, 2010

20100823mmpixdarlinghost.jpg Call & Response is a series of Q&As with bands, artists and random people we dig that live in Montreal, visit here, or have some dubious connection to the city.

Darling Ghost can be described as Theatrical Anti-Punk... that is if you feel the need to describe it. The band grew out of singer/songwriter Sheena Bernett's solo creations, most of them odd songs written on piano and performed with hyperemotionality. Her theatrical concepts are brought to life by double-bassist Chivas Delacroix, cellist Vera Alexis Charles and drummer/percussionist Enki de Treetop. With Sheena's surrealistic lyrics, highly personal delivery and the dynamics and arrangements of an avant-garde orchestra; you are sure to feel something whether it be pleasant, uncomfortable or pleasantly uncomfortable. You can catch them August 31st at Casa Del Popolo with Deer Ashes, Dear

I recently had a chance to sit down with Darling Ghost via the internet and ask them some very in-depth questions about life and music:

Who is your favourite Canadian Artist?
A: I have many, I can't really choose just one. Mark Berube, David Martel and Voila are just a few. On August 31st we will be sharing the stage with Voila at Casa. It's really amazing when you get to play with artists you deeply respect.

Besides family, friends, other music, and long summer nights, what influences your music the most?
A: Nature and the nature of things.

Where is the best place to listen to your music?
A: In my room! I often invite people over to hear new songs and drink tea. I call the event musical sketches....facebook it lol

What do you love most about Poutine?
A: The cheese.

What do you hate most about Poutine?
A: The tummy ache after.

Who was your first live concert? Was it everything you had ever imagined?
A: Uncut at Sala Rossa. Yes I cried and then the lead singer told me I better toughen up and go do some push-ups.

What's the best way to spend a Million dollars in 10 minutes?
A: Go on craigslist, buy a huge house in Scotland and fill each room with pianos.

How did you spend your 16th birthday?

A: Had my heart broken by Mavis Stains at the National Ballet School of Canada when she told me I wouldn't be able to be a professional ballerina. Then wrote a song and started a new path.

I remember seeing this band a few months back. I have to say, their live show is thoroughly entertaining. Never have I thought a woman in such a hideous dress could somehow look so gorgeous.

I saw them last month in a little cafe. They are fantastic and sound really good. And they are interesting. Not your typically coffee house fare.
