Osheaga: A Photo Essay

Posted by Margot / August 5, 2010

SHM_003.JPGIt might be all about the music, but MP freelance photographer Shannon Heather made sure to catch the weekend on film, too. Follow along for a visual of what was heard! Here, we see that Stars have perfected the boy-girl duo dynamic -- and do so amidst showers of rose petals at live shows. This day's featured the white, pink tipped variety.

SHM_001.JPGA very important moment in a young hipster's life is the pre-epic show war paint ritual; also known as getting one's game face on

SHM_002.JPGAlex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros takes a break from singing face to face with fans, rolling around on stage, directing obscene gestures at crowd members, and making opera faces

SHM_004.JPGHula girls entertain masses amidst the dust and grime swirling in the afternoon sun.

SHM_005.JPGThe Unsettlers garner attention for their Sunday show by a pathway performance that features dancers and a genuine strong man acting as a dart board.

SHM_006.JPGThe National deliver a powerful and melodic set that admittedly brought me to tears. "You know I dreamed about you for 29 years before I saw you" really jerks at the ol' water ducts.

SHM_007.JPGCan we complain about the fact that Arcade Fire released The Suburbs (from which a good part of their set came) in the States but not Canada pre-Osheaga? Maybe it was the label's decision? Regardless, this band is way too good to hate on, and so is the new album.

SHM_008.JPGThe Black Keys, without fail, generate a thick, wailing wall of sound for a two-piece, joined only briefly by some friends for backup.

SHM_009.JPGOne of the greatest things about festivals is that they are an anything-goes excuse to break out one's random closet items, like oh, say, racoon hats.

SHM_010.5.JPGSnoop has the tightly packed crowd singing and waving along while he schmoozes "all the sexy ladies".

SHM_010.JPG

SHM_011.5.JPGEmily Haines looks more disco than rock, adorned in a glittery ensemble as she bounces her way across the stage back and forth between video cameras. This diva is all rock'n'roll however, as she pays homage to the genre.

great pictures, especially of the national and emily haines shot (even though i am not a metric fan). i was going to bring my D-SLR but then the osheaga website 'rules' said no SLRs (or anything with a removable lens) allowed, and i didn't want my camera taken away...pretty weird. so i missed out on some really great shots of the bands, as well as the crowds. and i agree, osheaga seems to be an excuse to wear your most eccentrically trendy (okay, this is sort of an oxymoron) outfit!

Thanks Laura! Yes, unfortunately it is common concert practice to disallow any "professional" cameras, which they define as having a removable lens. The benefit to this, besides controlling who has photo privileges, is that the photographers who are on assignment have more elbow room. Additionally, there are less pushy photographers around, and admittedly, we can be an assertive bunch. Plus, anything expensive and breakable in a thrashing mob is always very risky, not only for the item itself, but for the safety of those around.

Nice photos! I took so many as well but mine don't look half as good. Can't wait for Osheaga 2011!

The look on Patrick Carney's face accurately depicts the fervor and zeal with which the Black Keys performed. Well shot.
