Kenlo, Teebs, Samiyam @ CFC (former Zoobizarre) - Feb. 4

Yes, Zoobizarre rose from its ashes. The Plaza St-Hubert cavern is now called CFC and it can still host some pretty damn awesome dance parties, like the one I went to on Friday night presented by Lookout and Music Is My Sanctuary.

I put one foot in and it was already packed and sweaty, just like the old days. Straight from L.A., Teebs was on, getting everybody to move to electro-dub instrumental tracks. In case you don't know the guy: he is on Flying Lotus' label Brainfeeder, he was one of the collaborators on Nosaj Thing's Drift remix album and he's a Pitchfork favorite, with reason. You can check out is more ambient mix here.

Up next was Samiyam (not to be confused with Samiam). The Michigan native is also part of Flying Lotus' entourage, which turned into them collaborating as FLYamSAM. Now based in L.A., he is still comes up with the freshest beats, mostly inspired by 70's funk & soul, movie samples and good ol' 90's rap. Needless to say his set was glorious and the heat level went up another notch. By then I had to take a break and get some fresh air! When I got back, Kenlo was on stage.

Scheduled to play before Teebs, Kenlo went through technical difficulties and ended up closing the bill.
Mr. Craqnuques is a local beatmaker / MC who worked with franco hip hop collectives Movèzerbe and (my personal favorite of 2010) Alaclair Ensemble while he puts on a more experimental touch on his solo releases. Today, MTV described him as the Madlib of Montreal. His performance definitely reflected that more experimental side and finished the evening on an interesting note.

Teebs later joined him for one final track and next thing I knew the party was over way too fast. Shout out to the kid who was walking around with no shoes on inside CFC + was also using his coat as foot protection while outdoors. Hope your cold isn't too bad dude.

Loved it! I'm a strong supproter of indie' or underground hip hop. I listen to a lot of Immortal Technique, Atmosphere, Tech N9ne, Talib Kweli, Jedi Mind Tricks, MF Doom, Madlib and Jurrasic 5. A lot of the others such as Asoep Rock I have heard some stuff, but I definitely need to listen to more of their stuff more indepth. Thanks for the list! It was a good read! I would love to see some more blogs about Alt Rap out there! It's good to see someone still listens to the best music of all time!
