SPRING BREAK II: The Akron/Family Split

Posted by Andrés / February 20, 2011

20110220_akronfamily.jpgA strange thing happened at Il Motore last night: experimental rock/folk group Akron/Family played an involved set that captivated most, and left others puzzled (someone nearby may have shouted out: "Play a song I recognize!"). This split is in large part alluded to and due to their latest album: S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT. Akron/Family is involved in the moment, and don't seem to be concerned about re-living the past. After a solid and 'easy' listen with opening band, Delicate Steve, Akron/Family's trio (Dana Janssen, Seth Olinsky and Miles Seaton) freed our minds, trembled our insides and - with assured unabashedness - made us laugh.

Margot's & my battery-less cameraman (see his rendition of the evening below) introduced me to the band three weeks ago, and quickly ensconced me in their discography from self-titled 1 to self-titled 2 - six years of experimentation that channels folk, rock, funk and other genres. This kind of sampling could be aimless, but in the hands of Akron/Family has been tempered by some Vedic-like rumination.

Nearing 11pm, Akron/Family began with "Island", the second track from their new album: a calm and smooth lead-in to the night to come. The audience was asked to raise a hand in the hand and sway with the waves of sound. We closed our eyes and imagined we were on a warm southern coast, far from the blistering cold outside. This was the hook. They had cast their line and grabbed us. This is also where a split is likely. Akron/Family makes more than music: they create atmosphere. If you are unwilling to go along with them on their sonic journey, the line splits. After what feels like eons of music vibrating through you, they throw another line to pull you further in. "Another Sky" has a chorus refrain that they repeated until the audience began to chant alongside them. While the album track is no more than five minutes, their live version gives the vocals over to the crowd for at least that long. Seth Olinsky then took out a tribal drum to support us. Later on in the evening, one song descends into Seth screaming and cawing as loudly as possible, until the inanity of the whole exercise seemed to surprise even Seth himself who hiccuped a laugh halfway through a scream.

Akron/Family surprises, both recorded and live. You may think you know their music after listening to either their older (more accessible) or their recent (more cultivated) albums. It's not until you hear that three minute song become ten that you recognize the trance-like genius they can exude live. So, a fair warning to all: come ready, and allow them to lead and get you lost. After all, it's the weekend.

If you missed it, read Margot's line on Delicate Steve, who opened for Akron/Family.
