Call & Response - Five Alarm Funk

Posted by Luc / March 14, 2011

The one thing that stands out about Five Alarm Funk is that they always seem to be having a fucking blast. When you've got 11 people (who are hopefully friends) in one band, the good times are almost guaranteed to roll. What's most impressive is that unlike other bands that will enlist outsider help to fill out their horn-heavy tunes, FAF actually just made these people part of the band. Not that the horns are lacking at any point. Sometimes while listening to this track I felt like I was in a chase sequence from The Mask. And I mean that in a good way.

You can catch Five Alarm Funk this Tuesday, March 15th, at The Belmont. I recently had the chance to sit down via 3 degrees of separation with the Conga player from FAF, Tom Towers, to ask him about life and love in the Canadian music-scape:

Who is your favorite Canadian Artist?
Mr. Something Something

Besides family, friends, other music, and long summer nights, what influences your music the most?
Lunar Tides

Where is the best place to listen to your music?
At our show! It is a spectacle to behold.

What do you love most about Montreal?
The amount of culture you experience simply by walking around the city in the summer.

What do you love most about Poutine?
Sweet sweet gravy baby.

What do you hate most about Poutine?
When you go for another bite and realize there`s no more left.

Who was your first live concert? Was it everything you had ever imagined?
Primus on their reunion tour. It blew my mind. It changed my entire perspective on what three dudes could do on stage

If your music was a famous historical figure, who would it be and why?
Genghis Khan, because he spread his way across the world relentlessly. Oh, and he had a nice hat.

What's the best way to spend a Million dollars in 10 minutes?
Dollar tacos at Carlo`s & Pepe`s. (editor's note: fuck yes)

What's the best place you've ever been to?
Being flown to Taiwan to play at a Mid-Summer Ghost Festival.

What's the worst place you've ever been to?
The Lilydale Chicken Refinery Bar in Calgary.

How did you spend your 16th birthday?
My bro got me an ounce-joint and we hot-boxed the house.

The Five Alarm Funk have never once failed to deliver majestic soul speaking beats, mind thumping bass chords, or world exploding horn lines in all my 700 years of worshiping the funk.

FAF shows are like a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a vest.

Some say the world will end in 2012 I say the funk will live forever.
