Call & Response: Honheehonhee

Posted by Jer / March 30, 2011

Honheehonhee Call & Response is a series of Q&As with bands, artists and random people we dig that live in Montreal, visit here, or have some dubious connection to the city.

Honheehonhee make music with reckless abandon. It's fun, brash and insanely enjoyable. It's the kind of music that makes you want to run around the snowy woods of the eastern townships in nothing but your skivvies and a frisbee (NSFW, but stick around for the well-timed drum hit on the frisbee just before the 2-minute mark). The band take their name from the sound of an N64 French squirrel character, a light-hearted nod that suggests the band is having a blast making music together.

From the shouting countdown that kicks off the opening track, "We Only Go", you're thrown into a party that lasts for 8 high-paced songs. Sure, the liquor runs out at a few points but there's an overall energy that's admirable, especially for a debut. There's an honest respect for the Arcade Fire's epic sense of songwriting, and more than a bit of homage to Win Butler's quavering vocals. But the band really shines when it leaves its influences behind and settles into its own sound.

Honheehonhee are releasing their first album, Shouts, in June. If there's any justice in the music world, they'll need no introduction this time next year. Here's Honheehonhee's answers to the world's most important questions, so you can get to know them before they take over the city.

Who is your favorite Canadian Artist?
Grammy Award winning Arcade Fire. Seeing them live for the first time before Funeral came out blew my mind, then they followed up with those three great albums. They know what's up.

Besides family, friends, other music, and long summer nights, what influences your music the most?
Trampolines and diving boards.

I hear that your band name has something to do with squirrels. Care to explain? How you know so much about squirrel communication habits/patterns?
It's a virtual squirrel. We've played a lot of "Beach" multiplayer mode in Conker's Bad Fur Day on N64. If you're interested in French virtual squirrel culture we highly recommend the game.

Where is the best place to listen to your music?
CFC! Come check it out March 31st at nine o'clock!

What do you love most about Montreal?
Chez Mein at the corner of St-Laurent and des Pins (the number five).

What do you love most about Poutine?
3 things: The cheese, The gravy and The French...femme that serves you.

What do you hate most about Poutine?
Nothing comes to mind.

A is for Animal is a killer track. So is Rumours in the New Morgue. When is the rest of the album coming out? What can Montrealers expect from it?
Thanks! It's coming out June 25th, 2011. It's called Shouts and Montrealers can expect it to sound much like our live show, but with fewer fuck ups.

Who was your first live concert? Was it everything you had ever imagined?
Chumbawamba. It was everything I imagined and more. Much more. If you haven't heard Tubthumping live, you haven't heard it.

If your music was a famous historical figure, who would it be and why?
George Nissen, cuz he knows what's up.

What's Honheehonhee like live? Are there squirrels?
Like a bath with your best friends using squirrel tail loofahs.

What's the best way to spend a Million dollars in 10 minutes?
A hundred thousand a minute.

What's the best place you've ever been to?
58º 0' 0" N, 20º 0' 0" E ( Look it up)

What's the worst place you've ever been to?
1º 42' 0" S, 127º 57' 0"

How did you spend your 16th birthday?
Go-Karting in Saint-Zotique.
