Call & Response: Winslow

Posted by Jer / March 4, 2011

Winslow Call & Response is a series of Q&As with bands, artists and random people we dig that live in Montreal, visit here, or have some dubious connection to the city.

Winslow want to make music raw, energetic, strong and fun again. The Montreal punk trio take on this mission with raucous screaming melodies and catchy crunchy guitar riffs. They've been around for almost 5 years, and it's clear they love making music. They've paid their dues with heavy touring in support of what they describe as "two sweet EPs". You may have caught them at the Vans Warped Tour here in Montreal a few years ago, but Winslow's most recent achievement is the launch of their debut fast-paced full-length, No Place for Foxes (on Tragicomedy Records). Winslow has a gig in Montreal tomorrow night and they're heading out soon on a cross Canada tour. Before they take off, I got the chance to fire a few of life's most pressing questions their way:

Who is your favorite Canadian Artist?
Justin bieber and Living with Lions.

Besides family, friends, other music, and long summer nights, what influences your music the most?
Getting shat on by life constantly.

Where is the best place to listen to your music?
At an all-ages shows and on the toilet.

What do you love most about Montreal?
As a band: not much. As people: food, partying and culture.

Do you think Montreal is a better place to play louder, faster, heavier music than a lot of other Canadian cities? If so why, if not, why not?
No, because we care too much and are too cool.

What do you love most about Poutine?
All of it.

What do you hate most about Poutine?

Who was your first live concert? Was it everything you had ever imagined?
Shoes. It was dope. They're the sickest skate punk band, it was at l'inco too.

How was your experience at the Vans Warped tour a few summers ago? Was that your first big fest?
It was a dream...still can't fathom it. Against Me!, The Souls, FYS,SYG...t'was a day to remember, no punk intended.

If your music was a famous historical figure, who would it be and why?
Nelson Mandela.

What's the best way to spend a Million dollars in 10 minutes?
At the dollar store on Chef Boyardee and 7-11.

What's the best place you've ever been to?
St Albert, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario.

What's the worst place you've ever been to?
Sherbrooke, Quebec on Aug 12, 2009.

You say your "mission is to make music raw, energetic, strong and fun again". How do you feel you've been doing so far? Is this a never-ending mission, or one you plan on changing once you have total music domination?
We'll free all the slaves, sell a lot of merch and make people want to start their own crappy punk bands.

Listen to more of Winslow on their myspace site. Or better yet, see them live:

Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though
you relied on the video to make your point. You clearly know what youre talking
about, why waste your intelligence on just posting videos to your site when
you could be giving us something informative to read?
