Preview: Braids et al. @ Sala Rossa

Posted by Margot / April 7, 2011

Braids music Montreal Sala Rossa Kelly ClarksonI recently got into hairstyle-themed music when Delicate Steve turned me onto Ponytail earlier this winter. From there I did my usual myspace/Wikipedia click-around, and seven degrees of Kevin Bacon led me to Braids.* Okay, maybe I'd heard them on some good podcasts, or read something about them from another semi-reputable source. But I hadn't gotten around to listening to the whole album until the doldrums of early March. Turns out it was just the right amount of melodic energy and starry-eyed shoe-gazey music to get me through to spring (which Frank Cavallero says will happen any day now).

Naturally, when I heard that they were stopping through the hometown on their North American tour, it went without saying that we'd be checking them out. But due to my failed efforts at attentional training, I decided first to go on a wild goose chase of other hair-inspired music groups. You wouldn't believe the plethora of absolute crud that exists on the internet (or maybe you would believe it). There's Bun, a sample-tastic example of seizure-inducing Japanese "hip hop," The Bangs, a bossa nova grunge band from Manchester, and Finnish experiemental question mark music, Dreadlock Tales. Ranging from electro indie pop to melodramatic metal, there's The Perms, Curl, Beehive, and even Gone Bald. (The exercise of producing this list reminded me of when, at 16, I got my wisdom teeth taken out and a friend made me a mix tape consisting only of songs with references to "teeth" in them.) And, of course, nothing's quite as seminal as this song.

They won't be alone, though - alongside our native speaking heroes will be Toro Y Moi and Adventure, a couple of solid, chilled out and equally energetic bands sharing the stage.

I wish I could tell you more about these bands and their constituent parts, but since they're all on the road, it was a bit hard to get in touch with this group of musicians. Perhaps if I bring a plate of our finest poutine to the show, I'll get all sorts of answers from them about their hopes, aspirations, and fictional pet's names. Check back at the end of the weekend to see si c'est une possibilité.

Who knows if the show's sold out; hopefully for those of you who want to go, it's not. But just to be sure, get there early. I'll be the one at the front of the line wearing the great wig.

* Fellow Wikipedia racers: I challenge you to get from Ponytail to Braids in less than seven clicks.

you know it's six degrees of Kevin Bacon, right? or did I miss a degree somewhere?
Margot / April 7, 2011 at 04:36 pm
Vincent: Thanks for the (admittedly bad) news.

Dan: Yeah, I know it's supposed to be six degrees, but for the life of me I couldn't Wikipedia race between the two in less than 7 clicks. I challenge you all to try to beat me.

In earlier days onee has to have angler party boat a better picture as to what strength and flex you will need.

While others fish because they want to feed voraciously as the waters warm.

At this time it appears like Wordpress is the top blogging platform
out there right now. (from what I've read) Is that what you're using on your blog?

Sweet blog! I found it while surfing around on Yahoo News.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News?

I've been trying for a while but I never seem to get there!

Many thanks
