20110819-Sheila_Giffen_@_3_Minots.jpgLocal musician Sheila Giffen will be celebrating the launch of her first EP at 3 Minots (3812 St. Laurent) tonight, so round up your friends, cuddle buddies and the rest for an evening of lovely, lovely music.

You can expect the night's festivities to begin with a performance from her band Motel Raphaël, and then folksy bluegrass band Farewell to Spring will play. To wrap up the evening, Sheila will perform her signature sweetheart acoustic tunes from her album and beyond.

Sheila, whose voice has been likened to that of Ani Difranco, began playing sets in the fall of 2009. But, she traces her love of music back to when her older sister taught her how to play "Brown Eyed Girl" on the guitar. Sheila began writing her own songs pretty much as soon as she could put a few chords together.

Sheila's remarkable voice paired with finger picking can be described as a truly singular brand of pop and folk. Listeners can hear the genuine emotion in her voice (a thing that's almost become a pre-requisite for anything I listen to nowadays). So it's no surprise that she's inspired by the people in her life, bits of literature she reads, lovely things like sunsets and not so lovely things like heartbreak.

"I think when I set out to write a song it's because something is either bothering me or really preoccupying me, and usually that something is relationships," said Sheila. " I'm not just talking about romantic ones, but all the relationships in my life. I feel like I end up writing and singing about the things I'm most uncomfortable sharing. I put all my fears and insecurities and failings and fragility and neuroses into the things I play and it's cathartic for me."

Sheila's live performance is defined by a sense of intimacy, with a sincerity that is as brave as it is refreshing.

"It's incredibly special to have the attention of a live audience. In a nerve-wracking sort of way, it feels good to stand up in front of people and share deeply personal things about myself through music," said Sheila. "I think people pick up on the honesty and vulnerability of the whole affair. Also, I think singing is good for my body and soul."

Sheila's EP consists of five songs: Glasses Frames, Dusty Yellow Sunset, Banshee Hymn, Oh my my and Beakful. They were recorded, mixed and mastered in June 2011 by Matthew Raudsepp, solo artist and member of Honheehonhee.
