The Venue Revue: May 30-June 5, 2012

Posted by Gabby / May 30, 2012

20120530_venuerevue.jpgThis week in concerts: The international digital arts and electronic music festival MUTEK is on this week, from May 30 until June 3. Expect a ton of events, some free and some not, for every night of the festival. For more information, you can check out the official website. Also in town this week, bigger names such as the Dandy Warhols, aRTIST oF tHE yEAR and the unforgettable blues legend B. B. King.

Wednesday, May 30:
Young Rival, Divan Orange
These Hamilton rockers describe themselves as the Beach Boys meets the Sex Pistols. You can make up your own mind as to what exactly Young Rival sounds like. Needless to say, it might bring back vivid memories of your high school years, if nothing else.

Friday, June 1:
aRTIST oF tHE yEAR w/ Guest DJ, Le National
Montreal electrofunk outfit aRTIST oF tHE yEAR just released a new album, Up Yours. If it's not the self-sampling, the 8-bit loops or the killer dance floor hits that got you, maybe the banana on the album cover will. The guest DJs are DJ Payz Play Suppa Deejayz, a turntable duo from Montreal.

Saturday, June 2:
PS I Love You w/ Army Girls & Reversing Falls, Il Motore
Hailing from Kingston, Ontario, the duo PS I Love You has been on a roll. Their latest, Death Dreams, came out in early May, is full of wild beats, catchy hooks and strange death dreams, as the album title may let on. Army Girls shows influences from blues and garage rock, but it's Carmen Elle's fantastic vocals that are the true heart of the band's music. Montreal trio Reversing Falls' explosive shoegaze-influenced pop perfectly rounds up this lineup. Get ready for a loud show of indie-rock goodness.

Sunday, June 3:
Deep-sea-flowers [EP Launch] w/ Give Me Something Beautiful, Divan Orange
Rémi Gauvin, former frontman of Projet Jeudi, presents his first solo project under the name of Deep-sea-flowers and launches the debut EP, Hey! Little Monsters. He will be performing with one of the EP's producers, Ludovic Alarie, from The Loodies. Opening for them is Give Me Something Beautiful, another local band, a mix of folk and indie rock whose songs rise and fall with elegance and intensity.

This Sunday @ Piknic Electronik: MUTEK presents a special edition of Piknic, featuring DC/Berlin duo Benoit & Sergio, members of the Wolf + Lamb artist collective, Wagon Repair label co-founder Mathew Johnson and Victoria's The Mole.
