The Venue Revue: June 19-25, 2012
This week in concerts: It's a big wonderful mess of concerts and festivals out there and indeed, when it rains, it pours. With Fringe running until June 24, and Suoni until June 23, this week is going to be nice and busy. Are you ready?
Wednesday, June 20:
Silver Dapple w/ Wymond Miles & Aim Low
Hailing from Montreal via Alberta and Chicoutimi, Silver Dapple make the sort of fuzzy noise pop that will get you out of your chair in about a second. It's got everything: solid beats, a smashing lady vocalist and wild guitar verses. A member of the Fresh & Onlys, Wymond Miles released his first solo album, Under the Pale Moon, in the midst of his dealing with loss and grief. His songs are strangely uplifting, and the singer-songwriter's pop is approachable and captivating. The local shoegaze/drone outfit Aim Low, a trio that makes dreamy pieces of epic proportions, completes this excellent lineup.
Friday, June 22:
Brasstronaut w/ Útidúr & Sweet Mother Logic, Divan Orange
On top of having a really cool name, Brasstronaut also make really cool music. Brassy as the name might suggest, it's also at times mellow, joyful, and always soulful. Also playing is Útidúr, a 10-piece Icelandic band with great flair and a rich, harmonious gang of musicians to back it up, and Sweet Mother Logic, a local post-rock/jazz outfit that seamlessly pairs cello with synth and other, more traditional elements of the rock band formation for a slightly outlandish result.
Saturday, June 23:
Chris Velan w/ Ria Mae, Divan Orange
Montreal singer-songwriter Chris Velan takes part in this year's Fringe After Dark series, pairing up his Americana-tinted folk rock with Ria Mae's bold, melodic pop.
Sunday, June 24:
Fringe POP, Parc des Amériques
Starting at 4PM, this Sunday's Fringe POP lineup is absolutely mouthwatering: one-woman band Elgin-Skye McLaren, London pop duo Royal Palms, the lovely piano-lady Caroline Keating, electro-rockers TangoCharlie, and Midnight Poutine Showcase superstars Technical Kidman. Need I say more?
Fringe Park madness:
Every night until Sunday, you can go get yourself an earful of free music
at the Parc des Amériques (corner of Saint-Laurent and Rachel). Artists ranging from pop to operatic rock will be performing for anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour and a half. Performers for this week will include Mélodie Rabatel, Sarah Jane Scouten, Teen Sleuth and the Jon Cohen Experimental.
