The Summer of Cadence Weapon
This summer bodes a soundtrack of great tracks and artists to discover, my discovery being someone who's been a regular fixture at shows and events around the Mile End. However this fixture has been in and out of the city as of late but returns to the scene this Monday night.
It had been a busy summer for Rollie Pemberton (better known to the scene as Cadence Weapon). The Edmonton born, Montreal based hip hop artist has been laying down new lyrics and mastering his wordplay off his 3rd album, "Hope in Dirt City" (released back in late May) and has been busy since and is not to be missed. He recently completed a 2 month tour with BC rock duo Japandroids (including a sold out show at Sala Rossa back on June 25th). Cadence returns to Montreal and to Sala opening for noise rock trio Liars on July 23rd on the Canadian leg of their tour (in support of their new album "WIXIW").
Cadence has also been fixture at Nouveau Palais with his Eat to the Beat DJ set on a given Thursday night (where he recently DJ'ed and will again be a regular fixture once touring ends).
"Hope in Dirt City" made the Polaris short list this past week, his 2nd nomination. Cadence is with some familiar company for the Polaris, up against former touring partners Japandroids and fellow Montrealer electro scenester (now LA based) Grimes. The album has become part of my Summer soundtrack including "Conditioning" and an homage to the after hours venues he would be a regular fixture at with "Loft Party".
