Elephant Stone: The perfect balance of Indian and psychedelic symphonies.

Last Friday night, Elephant Stone launched their must awaited self titled album at Divan Orange. Their show opened with Rishi Dhir sitting with his legs crossed on stage playing the sitar. As soon as he began to pluck the strings of his large instrument, the mood of the venue became very mellow and the crowd went silent under his charisma. The 8 minute instrumental introduction was simply wonderful and illustrated the talent and uniqueness of this Montreal band. The inclusion of the sitar gives this contemporary band a distinctive sound and edge.

Dhir pursued the night switching from bass, guitar and back to the sitar producing an eclectic sound that made you want to corybantic dance. The combine influence of psychedelic rock and Indian music was noticeable in each of the tracks they played. I found that their musical composition was at the core of their set and that the vocals moved in a nice complimentary way to their dreamy and exotic musical pieces.

By the end of their show, the atmosphere was festive and Elephant Stone had succeeded in making us feel like we were tripping and on a feverish journey.
