Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival: MP's Picks

Posted by Emily Hill / June 6, 2013

Suoni_program.jpgItalian for "sounds for the people" the Suoni Per Il Popolo experimental music festival opened yesterday for its 13th year. Don't be diverted by glossy marketing from Piknic and Folies, Suoni's DIY roots, rigorous commitment to local talent, and intimate concert spaces make this festival intrinsically montréalaise. "Fueled by freedom of expression, improvisation, and sonic exploration" the festival has helped launch the careers of countless household names from Arcade Fire to Grimes.

Suoni 2013 welcomes guest curators Ken Vandermark and Quatuor Bozzini, gets up close to rising star Mikal Cronin, and even invites you pick up the jazz flute and join in. Acts run from hip hop, electro, and free jazz, to noise, contemporary opera, and musique actuelle, with this year's lineup including over 50 concerts, five film presentations, special-guest DJ nights, and free workshops. Sure, you already have a calendar filled with festival events, but this year trade in the vodka+Guru at Jean-Drapeau for a cold Pabst and experimental folk. Edgy looks good on you.

MP Recommends:
RevelateurWeb.jpg Le Révélateur + Jefre Cantu-Ledesma & Paul Clipson
Friday, June 7
7 pm, Musée d'art contemporain

Multi-instrumentalist and experimental electronic music pioneer Jefre-Cantu Ledesma performs with film artist Paul Clipson at Montreal's contemporary art museum. The collaboration, Suoni blogger Alexi Katsanis writes, will be "an immersive experience; a marriage of sonic and visual textures and landscape." See the museum in a different context as the sun sets: sip a cold brew, contemplate paint spatters, and listen to the undulations of Le Révélateur - the electro/visual collaboration of artist Sabrina Ratté and Roger Tellier-Craig (Flying Pan Am & Godspeed You! Black Emperor).

Gambeltron-beaming-low-frequency-radio-waves.jpg Field Trip
Saturday, June 8
11:59 pm, Location TBA

This event promises to be truly transportive. Billed as "an interactive sonic traveling event" the DIY/found-object musician Gambletron will lead an audience armed with FM radios to a secret location. There she'll be joined by soundscape artists Jen Reimer, Max Stein, and Adam Basanta who will construct an "immersive multi-channel sound and light performance" in the space. The Reimer + Stein team has created fascinating works of ambient soundscapes improvised in various Montreal locations like the St. Urbain underpass and Metro Square Victoria. Dust off your old FM radio and grab some double As.

BRAIDS-Inde-Band.jpg Braids + Flow Child
Tuesday, June 11
8 pm, Casa del Popolo

Montreal's Braids will soon release Flourish//Perish, the follow-up album to their Polaris Prize-shortlisted 2011 debut, Native Speaker. Listen to the new tracks now on Pitchfork, and procure a copy of the limited-edition 12" June 11th at their Casa show. Flow Child opens with his beautiful synth orchestrations, dancy and dreamy, with all the right doses of glitch and fuzz. Previously in Pop Winds with Majical Cloudz' Devon Welch, his Flow Child project continues to deepen with each new Soundcloud cut.

Saltland-Pic-1.jpg Saltland + Eric Chenaux & Radwan Ghazi Moumneh + Wormholes
Friday, June 14
8:30 pm, La Sala Rossa

Cellist and songstress Rebecca Foon premieres Saltland, an enigmatic experimental folk project. Presented by Constellation Records, the evening begins with two Constellation mainstays, guitarist Eric Chenaux and Hotel2Tango's Radwan Ghazi who will take the stage together after an audio-visual mind bender by Wormholes. More on each of the artists here.

Mikal_Cronin.png Mikal Cronin + Shannon & The Clams
Sunday, June 16
8 pm, Il Motore

A Californian garage-rocker best known for his collaborations with Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, Cronin is super young, talented, and endlessly interesting. His music, at times fuzzy/garage-y, at others melodic/songwriter-y, is fun and accessible without ever being formulaic. Plus, he's got great hair.
Don't miss Cronin's opening act Shannon and The Clams. Shannon is described as "a brawling Etta James" backed by The Clams, "the 13th Floor Elevators singing Shangri La." A killer voice and dancy jams, the band promises "the sound of a 1964 prom band on acid."

And there are os many more! Find the full Suoni lineup on the festival website.
