Paula: Tequila, synthpop and attitude

Posted by Victoria / July 8, 2013

paula_credit_jane_penny_web.jpgPaula is the solo project of TOPS guitarist David Carriere. David is one of those musicians who know how to enjoy themselves, the kind of guy who would buy himself a new virginity, knowing too well how to make a record and turn it into something as exciting as a secret demo you'd receive by post. Don't miss a chance to hear his music and order the EP 'Relaxed Fit' on Arbutus Records. It will cost you less than two kebabs and it will be sent by David himself. A collector!

To start, when did you start playing music ? Give me a word on your differents bands.
I play in two bands, Paula and TOPS. TOPS is the main thing I spend time doing and we work out the music together a lot of the time. Paula is recordings I make on the side for fun. I started playing violin when I was a little kid but eventually changed to guitar.

What role has living in Montreal had in shaping your sound, if any?
Montreal is cool, I met a lot of my friends here and had to learn how to make music independently. It's hard to say what would be different if I lived somewhere else. Everything is super inexpensive compared to other zones, so there is a ton of time to waste.

What's your process like, in terms of songwriting?
It varies, but I never finish anything straight away. Currently there is a big pile of nearly finished songs that might end up done. You can come up with different things if you change the process. You can work it out with a group, by yourself or use a computer.

Did you need to work in solo after TOPS ?
Yeah, because I can use other ideas that wouldn't go well with Tops. It wasn't because of the band, I have always been recording stuff by myself, I just never released it because it was too sketchy.

What emphasis do you place on visual aesthetics - cover art and videos, in an age in which the majority of listeners get their music digitally?
It's probably important to present yourself in a way that people relate to or desire if you want to be successful, but I don't really care about new clothes or looking rich or anything like that.

Aside from a shared sonic palette, what is the message through your songs?
I like to sing about poor people and nightlife.

It is the start for Paula so you are limited in possibility for playing songs. How do you do to translate songs to your live performance?
All together now: FUNK it UP R&R

How was the gig last week @ Centre Phi?
We drank some tequila and Garbage Man's guitar was buzzing the whole time.

If Paula were edible, what would you taste like?
Watermelon and Carbonated Water with a hint of lime.

And, finally: Where do you see yourself in five years? And doing what ?
Living in Shanghai, riding the train, listening to trance.
