Top Seven Artists We're Looking Forward to Seeing at Osheaga

Posted by Greg / August 1, 2013

20130801-Osheaga.jpg Osheaga has come pretty far since its first instalment in 2006, when 25,000 people got lost on the way to the South Shore and stuck around to see Ben Harper. At that time, the idea of "selling out" a festival with multiple stages spread across an entire effin island sounded insane. It still does sound insane, but it happened this year, leaving Montrealers scratching their heads as they wonder why everyone doesn't just swim there and who really likes Mumford and Sons and Imagine Dragons that much.

The Osheaga lineup is a mixed bag this year. Not an awesome mixed bag that combines all your favourite chips into one unholy blend of carb and fake cheese ecstasy, but more like a trail mix with some tasty M&M'S hidden between dry but serviceable nuts. There's something there for everyone if you dig around a bit, whether you like the indie rock, the R&B, the rave tent, or The Cure.

Without further ado, or further pictures of Old Robert Smith, here are our top seven picks for the fest.

7. Angel Haze - Only if you like hearing what absolutely ridiculously amazing flow sounds like.

6. A Tribe Called Red - A First Nations DJ crew who write some of the must thumping and fresh beats going.

5. The Breeders - People! The Breeders! Like from that 90s song:

4. Beck - With no career missteps in 25 years, we can pretty much call him an elder statesman now.

3. New Order - As their recent live album demonstrated, they're still New Order.

2. Frightened Rabbit - If you like Mumford and Sons then you will thank me for encouraging you to check out a better version of them.

1. Frank Ocean - A masterful singer and storyteller, with the charisma to be our generation's greatest R&B artist.

Update: DUDE CANCELLED! Here's hoping his vocal cords heal soon.

1. Kendrick Lamar - He's writing some of the most innovative and, frankly, fun hip-hop today. At some point in the future, you'll be upset if you missed this.

There are, of course, tons more great acts playing this weekend. We're also very excited about Majical Cloudz, Father John Misty, Phoenix, Diamond Rings, Humans, DIIV, Beach House, Groenland, Explosions in the Sky, and Big Boi, to list off a few.

There you have it! Those of you who already have tickets: enjoy the festival, and don't forget to bring a poncho for the rain and a bag of bread crumbs to Hansel and Gretel your way back out of the deep forest of Ile Ste-Hélène. We'll have our team out in the field live tweeting the weekend and posting photos and reviews here.
