WHIRR to hit Casa on Friday - high chance of dreamy pop thunder, gazing at shoes.

Whirr colour.jpgPurveyors of all things loud and intense, San Francisco's Whirr will hit Casa del Popolo on Friday night, August 16th. True to their name, they're a group that aren't afraid of volume and noise, but never fail to systematically sprinkle dreamy pop magic throughout their compositions.

Comparisons with the likes of shoegaze greats like Ride and My Bloody Valentine have been justly leveled at the band throughout their existence. The floating vocals of Alexandra Morte, as well as the simple but expansive song titles ('Drain', 'Leave' etc) all hint of the greats of that genre.

By now, they're a group adept at crafting lush, long pieces of music, having arrived at record number two with the just-released 'Around'.

Care is always taken to run through their dreamy, fuzzy panoramas with a vein of frosty melody, with the best cuts from that record conjure up an almost cinematic level of immersion.

Featuring ex-Deafheaven man Nick Basset among their number, their latest is a good indication of what to expect in Casa on Friday night. Loud, intense, and pretty damn passionate - a swathe of guitars and synths will be brought to bear in order to generate their live panorama.

There's no denying the band are clear disciples of the shoegaze greats, distilling that sound down to a fine art rather than introducing many more elements to the mix. It may be a disservice to call them 'just' a shoegaze band, but they sure as heck fit the bill for one.

The group are a standout of what's been a minor resurgence in the style. From the likes of Pity Sex through to the latest from True Widow, the fuzz and dreaminess just keeps a coming. Whirr definitely stand out in their adherence to the elements of the style, and there's few around who can do it so well.

They will perform on the night with NOTHING from Philadelphia, who plough a similar fuzzy and dreamy furrow, and who are touring ahead of their debut release. A little bit tighter than Whirr's more reclined compositions, they've been snapped up by Relapse Records, a metal label that clearly found something very much worth liking in the group.

Reports from the recent shows on this tour as it's worked its way up the East Coast talk of intense performances, particularly from NOTHING, and a spectacular amount of volume being unleashed. So should you fancy being alternatively caressed and pummeled by waves of molten fuzz come Friday night - this is your show.

Tickets are priced at $8 in advance, and $10 on the door. The show kicks off at 9pm. Check out the Blue Skies Turn Black event page here
