POP MTL 2013 Artist Pass: Hua Li lists her show picks

Posted by Greg / September 27, 2013

20130927-HuaLi.jpgFor our Artist Pass series, we asked artists playing Pop Montreal which acts they plan on seeing at the festival once their own shows are over. The picks below belong to indie hip-hop artist Hua Li 化力, the moniker of jazz-trained vocalist Peggy Hogan.

Before heading out into the Pop Montreal wilderness, also take a look at my own guide to the festival and our podcast series featuring music from each of its five days.

Nick Persons released a 45 as Jackson D a few years ago, and I often reach for it when I want to have an intensely, vastly referential listening experience. He's a super skillful artist who truly appreciates the history of hip-hop and I expect nothing but great things from this new project. (Saturday at Resto Bar Kathy & Kimy)

In a similar vein, both Tyr and Aleks of Syngja are masterful musicians and they show their precocious kookiness in soundscape of this project. Jasa Baka creates the aesthetic world of their sets and all of it comes together for an enriching and hypnotically entertaining time. (Saturday at Divan Orange)

A K U A is the very definition of what it means to be a superbabe. Her music is fiercely smart and also relatable and emotional. I wish more music sounded like this. Our shows are almost at the same time, but those of you who are dedicated to superbabes could probably make it work and see us both. (Saturday at Divan Orange)

If you're not into superbabes and need a complete other option, I would direct you to ¡FLIST!. He will move to you tears and somehow you'll dance through the whole thing. A fantastic performer who always wears great shoes. Actually, he's a babe, too, but in a completely different way. (Saturday at Cabaret Playhouse)

See Hua Li 化力 perform Saturday at the Royal Phoenix with Cakes da Killa, Poirier & The Salvation Army, and Lido Pimienta.

Listen to a playlist of her picks below.

Our viewpoint in our life most often changes how we see things. Sometimes this change is good and sometimes this change is bad but it is our point of view that influences over what we see.
