You're never too old for Pop: a recap

Posted by Mike G. / October 2, 2013

Wannabe_1_s.JPGI'm sitting outside on Wednesday afternoon at chez Boris, basking in the after-glow of summer, but my body is still not fully past its post-Pop Montreal coma. And that's because I made the classic rookie mistake of trying to cover too much ground, in a desperate bid to be in too many places at once.

I was sure I had it figured out the moment I was let loose upon the merch tables on Wednesday evening to pick out my two prizes. I grabbed an American Apparel ladies' t-shirt, picked out the Pop Montreal bag which fit my Macbook most snugly, and — camera slung across my shoulder — jumped into the fray. Instead of sitting idly between shows, the plan was to break out the laptop, tether my iPhone, and push out fresh, high-quality photos onto Twitter and Instagram. Then, I'd jump on my bike and skip to the next can't-miss show.

The next three nights rushed past. I never claimed my free drink at Maison Pop; sometimes I even forgot to eat. A few shows stood out for me: the raw, intimate performance put on by Technical Kidman at Ballatou on Wednesday; a set of spooky, spacey, new-wavey goodness by New Myths, Thursday at CFC; and seeing The Dream opener Mozart's Sister play to a smartphone-happy Beyoncé crowd at L'Olympia Friday night.

I ended up "checking in" at twenty-something shows those three nights, partly thanks to an app that lit up my iPhone every thirty minutes to tell me what I was going to miss out on next. By Saturday, I'd cycled about 50 kilometres. Then I spent part of the day shadowing the Kid Koala bike tour around town, with Kid Koala scratching up a storm at various stops along the way while wearers of sparkly blue bracelets and other hangers-on partook in platefuls of nom-noms. At the penultimate stop, Kid Koala played a test press of his upcoming album on a portable record player in the parkette across from the SAT.

At some point that afternoon, I couldn't pedal any longer. So, blowing off an upcoming show on the Ubisoft rooftop, I put away the camera and went home to feed a starving feline. I spent the remainder of the evening actually enjoying the music, free from the tyranny of watching life through a viewfinder. But aim as I did for a final 2 a.m. hurrah with Metz at Eglise Pop late Sunday night, my body would have none of it. I had set my alarm for 1:30 a.m. and took a power-nap. But when the time came to wake up, I couldn't budge. "You're getting too old for this shit," my body seemed to tell me. So I turned off the alarm and went back to sleep.

'Swamp Thing' is one of DC's horror branded hero titles from the 'Dark' line of books.
The identification of the bodies depended, so far as we can see, on the
leaden plate. The further you get, the more accustomed you become to strategically placing pawns, and the
easier it is to destroy your enemies.
