Mundial Montreal: Navigating the World of Agents, Managers, and Grants

Posted by Amie / November 21, 2013

Speed Dating at Mundial MontrealDid you know there's only one world music management organization in Montreal? Did you know that it's a co-op? The Coop les Faux-Monnayeurs headed by Jean-Francois Guidon was one of the organizations represented on a panel of industry players at this week's Mundial Montreal world music festival. Over the course of the multi-day event that piggybacks M for Montreal's indie fest, agents cruised festival reps including the annual Festival des Traditions du Monde de Sherbrooke, Luminato in Toronto, and Small World Music. Here are the pearls of wisdom every world music group needs to know:

1. Managers want groups that are ready to be promoted and marketed and sold. That means they should already be a brand, a finished product that's ready for the stage. They have to be a hot ticket with an awe factor, so if you're still figuring out your sound or what's great about your group, take a little time before approaching management.

2. It's not always best to hire a manager or agent who's going to take a cut of the money you make. You need to be at a certain level, or expect to achieve a certain level where that's financially possible. If you can't do all the management work yourself, maybe hire an administrative assistant to help with the nitty gritty office details to let you focus on the music management and the music itself.

Speed Dating at Mundial Montreal3. Shmooze!! There was a speed dating session for agents, managers and artists (sellers) with festivals, event spaces and theatres (buyers) where you sign up to speak for 5 minutes with the buyers you want to meet. You could go with a laptop, headphones, and a demo DVD, or just a press kit or one-page and a link to a professional website. Artists represented themselves, and some agents represented a list of artists, and hopefully, like in the world of speed dating, sparks will fly.

You may have missed this shmooze fest, but if you check out the Mundial Montreal showcases coming up in the next few days, you can catch a lot of agents and managers and buyers of all kinds at the events.

DON'T:
1. Run up to a buyer and throw a CD in their face and leave. They get pitched all the time. Be more casual--a normal person--and calmly introduce yourself. Smile. Be polite. Offer to buy them a drink. Do a little research in advance on who might be there. If you love Quebec group, Sagapool, for example, and are interested in the Quebec Coop mentioned above to which they belong, do your research or get really good glasses so you can read nametags...

DO:
1. Enjoy the Fest. It's supposed to be fun.
2. Check out Music Managers Forum Canada for management and agent info and resources, including sample contracts and all sorts of handy docs.
