Pheek and Diagraf talk about the first edition of Mutek_IMG

Posted by Frances / November 21, 2013

pheekThe first edition of Mutek_IMG is this weekend, from November 21st to 23rd. For all you enthusiasts who wait patiently for Mutek all year, there will now be some autumnal relief. Get your fill of digital arts with this new three-day visually focused event. I'm particularly interested in the daytime symposiums; check the schedule for a long list of events aimed at stimulating your curiosity, or "combining various forms of discussion, presentation and case studies featuring key players in the local creative community, and a nighttime artistic program that will echo themes explored during the day." Plus, all the daytime events are Free! Just reserve a seat.

I met with Pheek, a Montreal Electronic artist and Archipel label owner, and Diagraf, local visual Artist and Geometric magician, to chat about their involvement in Mutek_IMG. Together they make up the AV experience Climate, described as a "short-term project where art meets music on a canvas of seasonal inspiration." They will be performing the piece, for the second time, this Friday at 9pm. Take it as an opportunity to be exposed to their vast sensorial realm, in a great venue and accompanied by an impressive list of performances at EXTRA_VISIONS 2.

The two artists seem to have a deep understanding of each other's work and an almost symbiotic relationship when it comes to the creative process. As friends they were waiting for the right moment to collaborate, Mutek 2013 was that time. By their account, the process happened with ease: "We understand each other's aesthetics, so JP [Pheek] and I both just knew where we were going."

Judging from the clip I saw from Mutek 2013, that place was far away; their description of an immersive atmosphere and journey is totally spot on. Pheek's mixture of musique concrete and organic sounds, are galvanized by Diagraf's elaborate geometry, wireframe landscapes, and a refined visual aesthetic.

"Performance is what brings the piece to life and because my music is so visual and almost demands the proper atmosphere, the visuals are the missing piece that finalizes the over-all impression."

Their perspective on Mutek_IMG is enthusiastic. Pheek explains, "It's nice to have a festival where we are really celebrating the visual artists, usually we don't really hear about them. They're the people who are behind the scenes. The musician always gets celebrated, but the reality is the visuals are an incredibly important component of a show."

I look forward to being immersed into "the vibe of an incoming solstice," with Climat this Friday night, and of course, charged energy ever present at MUTEK events. There will be no sleeping this weekend.

On Climat's MUTEK_IMG must see list is Frank Bretschneider, who blew Pheek away at Mutek's FIRST instalment, as well as Ewerks, who specializes in real-time simulation and will be joining Diagraf as part of the Montreal VJ Showcase this Thursday at 11:30am.

Can I simply say what a comfort to find an individual who genuinely understands
what they're discussing online. You actually know how to
bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to
check this out and understand this side of the story.
I can't believe you are not more popular since you certainly
possess the gift.
