Tuesday Tidbits - May 22, 2007

20070522_metro-platform.jpgMP news correspondent Chip is attending an international pommes frites conference and so, I will do my best to round up Tuesday's tidbits for you.

The strike by the Societe de Transport de Montreal's maintenance workers is the lead story in virtually every local news source today (including, it would now seem, Midnight Poutine). Maintenance workers went on strike one minute after midnight early Tuesday morning. The workers have been without a contract since January. Improvements to the pension plan seems to be the biggest sticking point. Transit service will operate during the weekday rush hours, with limited service on weekends. Some found this morning's commute relatively breezy. La Presse gives a beakdown of the numbers with an examination of past STM strikes. The STM's website gives current transit schedules and asks customers to please note that the bus drivers, train operators, and ticket booth cashiers are not part of the striking workforce.

In other train and transport news, CP Rail is waiting for regulatory approval to build a new intermodal terminal in the town of Les Cedres, on the western tip on the metropolitan region, where the anticipated terminus of Highway 30 would intersect with Highway 20. CPR is curently facing a space shortage at the terminal in Lachine.

Overcrowding in Montreal's largest prisons is a growing problem. Dozens of inmates are forced to sleep on the floors and in makeshift cells. Tension and worry inside the prisons continues to mount.

Quebec's favourite daughter and founder of Nickels, Celine Dion has just announced an upcoming world tour that will have not just one, but possibly two Canadian stops, including Montreal. Dare to dream....

And for my last news tidbit, Montreal environmentalist and policy maker Desiree McGraw has recently returned from Nashville where she spent a weekend in the presence of Al Gore, training to present his "An Inconvenient Truth" slideshow to local audiences. Join her at 6:30 pm tonight, at the Atwater Library (1200 Atwater), for her inaugural presentation. Free admission.
