Thursday Newswhack - Jun. 7, 2007

Posted by Jer / June 7, 2007

Here's your news for now:

Although the hockey season ended months ago for Canadiens fans, hockey is now officially over for another year. The Anaheim Ducks whacked the Ottawa Senators 6-2 to take the Stanley cup with a 4-1 series win. Now viewers are free to move on to exciting summer sports, such as cycling, baseball, and slip n slide.

Quebec's gas prices will soar even higher this fall as the provincial government plans to introduce a new carbon tax (0.8 cents a litre). Officials estimate the tax, designed to offset pollution, could raise $200 million a year. Luckily for consumers though, the government suspects that the "oil companies, which are reporting record profits, will absorb the tax and not pass it on to consumers". Yeah. Oil companies are renowned for good deeds like that. They're also going to start subsidizing my metropass.

The Surete du Quebec are still looking for the arsonist responsible for a fire in Val-David on Tuesday that destroyed the house of a member of Montreal's Hasidic Jewish community. Many of the Hasidic families, based in Outremont, spend their summers in Val-David and are shaken up by the incident.

If you've ever wanted to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for impersonating Elvis songs (oh, don't tell me you haven't thought about it), you'll have to compete with this guy. Gaétan Lalonde of St-Jerome, sang 44 tunes by the King in rotation for 46 hours and 30 minutes. I can't tell what's more ridiculous: the fact that he did this, or the fact that in doing this, he broke the previous record which he set himself in 2004, and then again in 2005. Genius.

Although it's no Brad Pitt, apparently Flickr is coming to Montreal this month too. The folks over at Metroblog are excited, as is Midnight Poutine's Flickr pool.

"Meat Day & Slip n slide"? Amazing. Although I prefer Wet Banana myself.

That duck is eating a billboard. I think it is tough. At the very least, it is huge.
