Your morning news roundup for Thursday, October 25th, 2007:

The Conservative Throne Speech was adopted yesterday as a result of Liberal abstention from the vote. Although the Liberals did not approve of the speech, leader Stéphane Dion says that his party did not want to provoke another election. The Bloc Québécois and the NDP opposed the Conservative measures.

Quebec's list of top-ranked high schools is here and the results are similar to previous years: College Jean de Brebeuf and College Jean Eudes tied for No. 1. Also tied for first spot is Herziliah High School - Snowdon.

The West Island city of Beaconsfield will yield to Quebec's language laws after a battle that lasted several months. The Anglophone bastion previously refused to translate its street signs into French, but Mayor Bob Benedetti says that new bilingual signs will better reflect Beaconsfield's diversity.

Foodie news: Wine is becoming the beverage of choice for more and more Canadians, reports Statistics Canada. Currently, beer accounts for almost half of all alcohol sales, but wine reported higher sale increases between 2006 and 2007.
