Your morning news roundup for Monday, November 12th, 2007:

The New York Times has called this dish "a staple from Quebec, embarrassing but adored." On the CBC series The Greatest Canadian Invention, it came in 10th ahead of the snowblower. It has been used in the past to denigrate Quebecers, but few of us would give it up. Yes, the mighty poutine turns 50 this year.

Remembrance Day celebrations were held across the country yesterday to honor and commemorate Canadians who fought in times of war. A crowd of 30,000 gathered at Ottawa's National War Memorial to watch Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Gov.-Gen. Michaëlle Jean lay wreaths. Nov. 11 marks the signing of the armistice in 1918 that ended World War I.

Several hundred protesters took to the streets yesterday to demand a crackdown on speeding, led by the parents of three-year old Bianca Leduc who was killed in a car crash on Halloween. The march took place hours before Quebec's transport minister proposed a series of measures to improve road safety in the province. Julie Boulet says the new measures include doubling the fine for extreme speeders, testing a photo radar project in various locations, and banning cell phone use on the road (unless hands-free units are used).

Workers at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery voted yesterday to end a lengthy labor dispute. The six-month dispute included a lockout followed by a rotating strike. Hundreds of bodies were kept in cold storage. 248 remain to be buried. Weeds were allowed to overshadow many graves, including those of famous Montrealers like Maurice Richard and Robert Bourassa. Cemetery director Yoland Tremblay said the new deal should "guarantee labor peace for at least 10 years."
