Your morning news roundup for Wednesday, November 14th, 2007:

The judge assigned to the civil case of Valery Fabrikant has withdrawn from the proceedings, claiming that he can no longer tolerate the plaintiff's "aggressive," "cynical" and "denigrating" attitude in court. Fabrikant, a former Concordia professor convicted of killing four colleagues in 1992, is suing other staff members at the university for $600,000 in damages. Fabrikant is representing himself and appeared via video link from prison.

Protests from students at the Université du Québec à Montréal have forced city police to expel them from school premises twice in less than 24 hours. An incident on Monday surrounding potential rector Calude Corbo resulted in the arrests of 3 students. Later that night, police removed about a hundred students who barricaded themselves in the Hubert-Aquin pavillion with the intention of spending the night. UQAM students are protesting the institution's budget plan.

Sore winner: Premier Jean Charest blasted Mario Dumont after the Action Démocratique du Québec leader's non-confidence motion was voted down yesterday. Dumont tabled a motion last week calling for Charest's minority Liberal government to step down because of the party's refusal to abolish school boards. But without Parti Québécois support, the motion was defeated 72-39. Charest criticized Dumont of "accumulating sound bites for 10 years," saying that "doesn't make for a political ideology."
