Your morning news roundup for Wednesday, November 28th, 2007:

Cute as all hell: The official mascots for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver were unveiled yesterday to a crowd of children. The three mascots are based on aboriginal lore and British Columbian culture. They represent a sea bear (Miga), a sasquatch (Quatchi), and an "animal spirit hybrid" (Sumi). Past Olympic mascots have fallen flat, but early response to Miga, Quatchi, and Sumi was largely positive.

Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey called a report into the death of his daughter a "cover-up." Laura Gainey, 25, was lost at sea nearly a year ago when she was swept off the deck of the tall ship Picton Castle in stormy weather during an adventure voyage from Nova Scotia to Granada. A report written after the tragedy by retired U.S. navy captain Andy Scheer never came to light. It was quietly replaced by a second report, which "painted a far rosier picture of the ship."

Major Internet providers like Bell and Vidéotron profit from stolen connections through surcharges for exceeding monthly bandwidth limits, according to Le Devoir. The wide availability of wireless "Wi-Fi" points in homes makes it easy for others to join the network, thus accessing the Internet for free. This is illegal and results in bandwidth spikes for paying users. Both Bell and Vidéotron have justified their lack of action by claiming that stolen connections were "not very significant" and "marginal" phenomena.

News from the sidelines: The Habs beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in a shootout yesterday night. The victory follows two losses and a win against the Leafs this season. Nyah nyah. Next, the Canadiens will be in New Jersey on Friday to play the Devils and back home on Saturday to face off against the Nashville Predators.
