Your morning news roundup for Wednesday, January 16th, 2008:

Nine Canadians were arrested as part of an ongoing international child abuse and pornography investigation, including two Montreal men. "Operation Koala" probed videos of children being that were filmed mostly in a Ukraine studio and bought by customers around the world, including Canada. In Montreal, two men were arrested last fall and each charged with two counts of child pornography. The investigation began when a video depicting the rape of two young girls was found in July 2006.

The federal government fired Linda Keen yesterday night as president of the troubled Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Keen's dismissal follows a month of increased bitterness between Canada's nuclear watchdog and the country's primary nuclear operator, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. The Harper government directly blamed Keen for the closing of the Chalk River nuclear reactor in November and the resulting shortage of life-saving isotopes for medical treatment. Michael Binder has been named interim president and Keen will continue to sit as commissioner.

What will they think of next?: A man who posed as a Canadian Forces buyer is facing fraud charges after his Brossard home was raided by police forces yesterday. Réal David, 57, of Brossard is alleged to have committed fraud worth nearly $300,000 by posing as a buying agent for the military. An investigation turned up bulk quantities of toilet paper, garbage bags, and cleaning liquids, which David sold at flea markets. He has an extensive criminal record and was sentenced to 4 years in prison in 2001 after pleading guilty to forgery, fraud, and theft.

News from the sidelines: The Montreal Canadiens redeemed themselves from Saturday's disappointing loss to the New York Rangers with a 3-1 win over the New York Islanders. The Habs' four-game road trip ends with Thursday's visit to the Thrashers in Atlanta.
