Your morning news roundup for Thursday, January 31st, 2008:

Montrealers should brace themselves for rollercoaster weather in the next couple of days. Temperatures climbed above regional norms yesterday and went down 10-15 degrees by nightfall. Freezing rain, ice pellets, and drizzle coated the city in ice. Today is expected to be sunny and near the seasonal norm of -5 degrees Celsius. The Weather Network predicts a temperature of -2 degrees and an 80 chance of light snow for Friday.

In directly related news: Icy road conditions are being blamed for a head-on collision yesterday morning that sent 6 elementary students to the hospital. The collision happened in Varennes and involved 2 mini-vans, one of which was a school bus. The 6 students in one van where on the way to school. The driver of the other van lost control and slammed into the bus. Five ambulances rushed the children to the hospital, but no one was seriously hurt. The drivers had minor injuries. Varennes is northeast of Montreal.

Now, I don't usually do Toronto news but this is definitely newsworthy: Tuesday night, trustees of a Toronto school board narrowly approved "black-focused schools." The 11-9 in favor followed a night of impassioned debate from both sides. The outcome means that an "alternative Afro-centric" school will open in September 2009, but location and grade levels are still undecided. Those against the decision say that black-focused schools equal segregation. Speakers in favor argue that the idea is misleading. The woman who first proposed the idea called it "self-determination, not segregation. The school will be the second of its kind in Canada; an elementary school in Nova Scotia also has an Afro-centric curriculum.
