Your morning news roundup for Tuesday, February 19th, 2008:

Are you kidding me?: Yesterday, 11,000 taxpayers in St. Lambert on the South Shore signed a petition demanding that the city clear their snow properly. St. Lambert decided to save about $100,000 by cutting back on 60 per cent of snow removal services. The city did resume snow clearing on nearly two dozen residential streets after the dangers became clear. "But overall, the cuts made sense," said a spokesperson for the city. The story seems to have struck a chord with Montrealers as The Gazette published some reactions from their readers today.

Cuban leader Fidel Castro quit after 49 years in power. The 81-year old ex-president hasn't made a public appearance since his stomach surgery almost 19 months ago. He also said he won't seek a new term when the National Assembly meets on Sunday. They are expected to elect Castro's brother and designated successor, 76-year old Raul Castro, who has been running the country in emergency capacity since 2006. Although many expect democratic change, it's unlikely that political reforms will happen just yet. Castro will continue his influence as first secretary of the Communist Party.

And I thought we'd come further than this: Most women still think they're overweight, according to a survey conducted in December. Nearly 3 in 4 women in Quebec want to drop the pounds, even though half are at a healthy weight. For some, it's even worse: 1 in 5 reported that managing their weight dominates their lives. The Canadian survey of almost 3,000 women found that 62 percent of Quebec women felt pressured by society to be thin or lose weight and that 40 per cent felt "bombarded" by mixed messages about health and nutrition. 20 percent of respondents who were technically underweight still wanted to lose weight. As for motives, the big 2 are self-esteem and health reasons.

Most women, and men over 35, ARE overweight!
Get off your asses, stop watching repeats of "That 70's Show" on Global over the weekends and get out and do something other than shop for groceries.
